Hi guys! For starters, I got this idea from ♜ rook (who no longer is a forum member, crie crie), ★ღGingerheartღ★, and ♣Gingernose. So credit to them. I also got the traditionalism "idea" from ailuronymy: ailuronymy.tumblr.com .
Another thing to note: It could be confusing that the owner of ailuronymy also calls themselves Grey, so I'll be referring to myself as Gray and them as Grey. ---
Traditionalism are names that are more "realistic" and make more sense than, say, canon names or lyrical names. I don't always follow Ailuronymy's form of traditionalism, but I'll make sure to for this thread.
Traditional names include: Gingerflower, Minkheart, and Firetail.
Canon names include: (Names from the books) Goosefeather, Feathertail, and Moonflower.
Lyrical names include: (Names that are "pretty") Blossompool, Mooncloud, and Flowerpetal. ---
FAQ: "How are traditional names chosen?" Generally traditional names are from the first arc of the book (Blue- *cough cough*) or are generally any flora or fauna in England. There are also names that could apply to anywhere (Fire-, Storm-).
"Is traditionalism the best naming style?" Yes. Of course not, all naming styles are unique and great in their own way! However, traditionalists, such as myself or anyone that I gave credit to, believe that it's a more realistic way to name warrior cats.
"What's a name-changed name?" A name-change is whenever a cat gets a notable scar or injury that would derive a name-change. I, personally, don't believe that these would be preferred in the warriors universe, as for some cats (*Brightheart*) it would be known as a bad memory.
"Are there any other ways that a name could be used, such as Firekit for a kit born in a fire?" No, sorry. Traditional prefixes are used to describe a cat's pelt so that it's easily identifiable, and suffixes are used to describe their skills, so the conditions in which they're born in wouldn't make a difference.
"But, -step, is traditional and also nontraditional! How could this be?" -Step is used to describe a cat that "steps" the way their prefix would. It would not be traditional if -step was used with, say, Light- because Light- does not step, but it would be suitable for Badger-, or most types of animal.
"Are Moon-, Sun-, or Star- traditional?" No they are not. The moon, sun, and stars are sacred to the Clans and to give this prefix to one cat would be to say that cat was more important than others (*cough* Stargleam* cough). There's also the problem with Star-, as if that cat became leader someday, its name would essentially be Starstar, and that would not make sense.
"For names such as Storm- or Cloud- what would you do if they had the same suffix as their prefix?" Such as Stormstorm or Cloudcloud? Those names would be unacceptable, as they make little to no sense. -Storm and -cloud are personality suffixes, so if there are no other suitable suffixes to match their skills, you could use -pelt or -fur to describe an "average" cat. There's nothing wrong with them being average, of course. Average cats are just as important as special ones!

ayy, another traditionalist! :3 always happy to see more. i always like to get more opinions on my characters, so here goes!~
Cat's name: Thistleheart/fur/stripe Gender: tomcat Physical appearance, notable scars: blue-gray tom with orange eyes; has a nick in his left ear Skills/Traits/Personality: he isn't the best hunter or fighter, but he never says no. if the clan needs prey, he’s out in the forest from dawn to dusk hunting. if a battle breaks out, he’s on the front line. If the leader is trying to gather the clan, he’ll be the one to corral others to their meeting point. all the same, if kits are goofing off or missing, he’s the one that sets things right. because he lacks a particular talent, he feels inadequate and works especially hard to prove himself. As a result, he is especially humble and becomes very shy when complimented. History: nothing too special, tbh. he was an only kit, and was doted on by his mother. his apprenticeship wasn't horrible, but he did get assigned to a fearsome mentor, who pushed him hard in his training. he earned his warrior name a while later and was proud of himself. he hasn't taken a mate, and he doesn't know if he really wants one. Family: blueface (mother, deceased) father unknown (deceased, though, most likely). no siblings Other: n/a!
Cat's name: Owlnose Gender: dmab, molly Physical appearance, notable scars: brown tabby molly with orange eyes Skills/Traits/Personality: her hunting is good, and her tracking is excellent. some cats view her as naive, but she's actually very perceptive, having an excellent memory, being able to remember where certain herbs are found and usually comes back to camp carrying either a herb or prey. she's not one to give up a good trail, and will follow it until she get what she's looking for. History: n/a Family: all deceased Other: is a good scout/sentry duty, as her sense of smell aids her in detecting intruders.
Name: Thistleheart/fur/stripe (As a note, I'm not sure whether the photo linked was supposed to be Thistleheart/fur/stripe, but I'm going to assume it wasn't, as you described your cat as a blue-gray tabby and that cat happens not to be one!)
Thistle is applicable for a gray/blue-gray cat, so I assume that means tabby markings would be acceptable as well, so Thistle- seems good for this cat! More prefixes that would work as well or possibly better would be; Cuckoo- or Falcon-.
Heart doesn't seem like a good suffix for Thistle, as -heart cats have a strong sense of belief in themselves, however Thistle appears not to believe in himself at all! Therefore -fur would probably be a more suitable suffix. -Stripe would be a cat without notable tabby markings, and blue-gray cats rarely have tabby markings, and when they do, they're usually very faint/light. Also, you didn't mention that he had any markings!
So for the name, I would go with Thistlefur!
Appearance: As I said, I'm not sure if the photo is supposed to be Thistlefur, because it appears to be more of a dilute ginger cat or a very light gray one. Orange eyes seem to fit with this character as well, as orange eyes are usually preferred for blue-gray cats (along with green, and occasionally blue).
History: His history seems rather normal, and there isn't much to comment on. You might want to add more depth to him, because saying that he was "doted" or perhaps rather spoiled makes him seem mary-sueish. However, I can't fault you for that. I also like the fact that he's not sure if he wants to take a mate, as it's unique but not in an in-your-face kind of way!
Summary: In summary, Thistlefur would be a preferred name, though Thistlepelt would also work, as would Falconfur/pelt and Cuckoofur/pelt. His appearance is fitting and not over the top, which is good! You might want to add some white markings perhaps, but that's certainly not something that I would fault you for not having! You also might want to give him more depth or character. He seems pretty self-reliant and would probably be a good authoritative figure someday! ---
Name: Owl- Owl is usually preferred for a brown dappled cat, but it also works for a brown tabby cat! Other names that might work would be bramble- or pipit-.
-Nose is usually preferred for a cat with a good nose, perhaps! aha. It would be a cat with excellent tracking skills, which this cat seems to have, so -nose would be fitting! Perhaps -whisker would be acceptable too if her hunting was excellent as well!
For a name, I'd probably keep it as Owlnose, but you could always change it to Owlwhisker, Bramblenose, Bramblewhisker, Pipitnose, or Pipitwhisker if you so felt the need to!
Appearance: You say she is a brown tabby, but you don't mention the shade of brown, so I'll assume she's a neutral brown color? Orange eyes also seem very fitting, as for cats it's pretty common, but in characters it seems to be an eye color that is lacking!
History: N/A. You can always develop this later!
Summary: In summary, Owlnose seems to be a fitting name for this cat, but Owlwhisker would work as well! You might want to specify the shade of brown that she is, such as medium brown, light brown, or dark brown but otherwise that part is good. And it would also be good if you could develop her history, but I can't judge that part, so I'll leave that alone!

Cat's name: Asterpelt Gender: DFAB Tomcat Physical appearance, notable scars: Asterpelt is a tom with a blue-grey pelt who, when at first glance, looks weak-willed and small compared to his fellow clanmates. His eyes are yellow in color. His short-furred pelt is unscathed excluding a small scar on his flank from a prior battle. Skills/Traits/Personality: Asterpelt isn't anything too special, most will think. He is very enthusiastic toward his clanmates and loves to try new things. His clanmates don't find anything very noteworthy about him, besides his incredible speed; he might as well be the fastest in the clan! However, he is very domineering in a way that can fend cats off, but his clanmates have gotten used to his arrogant attitude. Some cats close to him suspect that this arrogance is fake and made up out of thin air, but Asterpelt doesn't weaken from this attitude. History: n/a for now! i like just developed this character so i dont have a history or a family for him 0: Family: n/a Other: not at the moment, other than the fact that he was born female, but is mentally a male 00:
Maple- is a prefix suitable for a tortoiseshell cat, which yours appears to be. This cat would also be predominantly light brown, golden brown, golden, and ginger, whilst yours appears to just be dominantly ginger, so I'd likely suggest Cherry- as a prefix instead, as Maple- usually applies to a golden-pelted cat of some sort.
-Storm seems to fit this cat well, as it usually applies to a cat with an unpredictable and dynamic nature. I can't offer any other prefixes might work as you didn't mention this cat's skills, but you could also use -pelt, -fur, or -face if any skill suffixes wouldn't apply to her.
So overall, Cherrystorm seems to fit this cat better!
Appearance:
From what you told me she seems like a tortoiseshell-and-white cats. Eye color wasn't mentioned but remember that blue eyes on tortoiseshells is actually quite rare, and isn't very likely for a cat to have! I would probably recommend yellow or amber for this cat's eyes.
History:
Seems like a normal history, but kind of underdeveloped. Could definitely use a bit more detail all-in-all!
Summary:
In summary, a better suiting name for this cat would be Cherrystorm. I would recommend this cat having yellow or amber eyes, but green eyes aren't impossible. And you could definitely think about their story more!
---
@bramblingwhisker here ya go!
Name:
Aster- usually applies to a blue-gray cat that is likely pale, but doesn't necessarily have to be. This seems to suit your cat well! Another prefix that might work would be Blue-.
-Pelt generally applies to an "average" cat as does -fur and -face, however, you mention that he is the fastest cat in his Clan, therefore he derives a skill suffix! -Foot would definitely be more suitable for this cat, as he doesn't appear to be average in skill when he is that fast.
So overall, Asterfoot would probably be a better name for this cat!
Appearance:
This cat is a blue-gray cat with yellow eyes. That's a good match. Usually an Aster- cat would be a pale blue-gray, but that's not required. You could also try orange eyes if you find that you don't like the blue-gray/yellow eyes combo.
History:
N/a. Definitely try to develop it! You could even develop it while roleplaying!
Summary:
In summary, Asterfoot would probably be a better name for this cat. You could replace yellow eyes with orange if you feel the need to. And also make sure to get that history going so that your cat can have some depth! Overall he's a good cat!
