Prologue
Kestrelfeather slipped through the undergrowth, on her way to the lake. She was careful to put her paws down lightly, as if stalking a mouse. Thorns dug into her pelt as she pushed through an especially prickly bush.
The ferns waved in the wind, and the sight of a cat sitting on the lakeshore soon appeared.
“Pebblesplash!” She cried.
The other cat’s head whipped around and his claws unsheathed, but then Pebblesplash realized who it was.
“Kestrelfeather!” He said, bounding up to her.
“I have something to tell you.” She muttered.
“Go on.” Pebblesplash said.
“I’m expecting your kits!” Kestrelfeather smiled, but she noticed Pebblesplash didn’t.
“My…kits?” He stammered.
She nodded vigorously, imagining how adorable they would be, with their stubby legs and cute faces. Kestrealfeather already felt proud for the kits, they would become apprentices, then warriors.
“I don’t want kits.” Pebblesplash cut into her thoughts. “It’s hard enough meeting with you.”
“But they’re your kits!” Kestrelfeather cried.
“Not for as long as I live.” He spat.
“How can you say that? I thought you loved me…” She said, tears welling up in her eyes.
“I knew it was a bad idea to meet you.” Pebblesplash growled. He lashed at her with claws unsheathed.
Kestrelfeather stumbled backwards in surprise and she felt red trickle down her face. Pebblesplash jumped on her and scored his claws down her flanks. She battered his stomach weakly with her hind paws.
Suddenly, his weight was lifted. Kestrelfeather whirled around and saw her best friend, Flowerpetal, battling Pebblesplash.
“Flowerpetal!” Kestrelfeather yowled.
“You mouse brained excuse for a warrior!” Her friend was screeching at the cat below her paws. Pebblesplash wriggled free and darted out of reach.
“I don’t want anything to do with those kits as long as the clans exist!” He screeched, before darting away.
Flowerpetal ran towards her. “Don’t worry. I won’t tell anybody who the father is.” Flowerpetal assured her.
“Oh, what am I going to do? They’ll need their father!” Kestrelsnap cried. It seemed like her dreams of watching her kits grow up had crumbled in her paws.
“They’ll be fine.” Flowerpetal soothed her. “Let’s get you back to camp and have Amberbounce take a look at you.”
