Moonlight shone through the window of a stone wall cutting through through the darkness. The silver beam, although not too bright, revealed the silhouettes of various objects. The space was enclosed by the faintest edges of walls. At one side, the corner of a desk poked ever so slightly into the light, on the other the faint outline of a bed.
Suddenly, the bed trembled and a small figure shot up. Her breath was heavy; her body trembled in fear. She sat up for just a moment before her head jerked sideways and she froze. “Who’s there?” She spoke with dismay.
A yellow light gradually moved towards the room. It was accompanied by the sound of pawsteps against a cold stone floor. As the light brightened and the figure sprang out of bed.
“Calm down Chile” A voice whispered through the light. The head of a wolf poked out from an opening in the wall. Her fur was a majestic purple, her eyes green as a tropical forest. She carried a lantern in her muzzle.
Chile stood up “Lunera?” Tension released from her body. “Sorry I’ve been a bit jumpy” she admitted stepping into the light. She was a short creature, standing on two feet. Her seemingly grey fur was tinted yellow from the lantern. She reached her four fingered hand towards her desk and grabbed a necklace. She looked down at it, running her fingers through the four rocks that were attached to it.
“You had another dream didn’t you?” Lunera asked softly. Her voice was flooded with concern.
“Yes… every night they haunt me, becoming more vivid with every recurrence.” She continued to run her fingers through the neclace with a solemn gaze.
“Listen Chile: I know you’re confused, lost… but I really think you should tell me what--”
Lunera’s words were cut off by Chile’s penetrating gaze. Her large round amber eyes hinted signs of fear and distrust. “I’ve told you before, I’ll be fine.” She continues to stare at the wolf with challenging eyes.
“Well you most certainly don’t seem fine!” She held her breath back at the end. Did she really just say that? “I mean…” she trailed off not knowing how to recover.
Chile remained in the same distressed position as before. Her eyes however, began to cloud with pain and confusion. Her pupils darted around the room. “Leave.”
“Chile there’s gotta be something i can do to help you!” Lunera insisted. “You’re my friends, I just really, really concerned.”
“Leave!” Chile’s voice cracked. A tear trickled down her cheek as she continued to painfully glare at Lunera. The wolf slowly back into the hall. She lifted the lantern as she moved engulfing the room in darkness once again.
Lunera’s head hung low as she walked down the large stone corridor. The lantern lit up the the dark stones. The stone halls were gloomy filled with nothing. The wolf halted where the hall divided two ways. She turned her head waving the lantern around.
“Hey, watch where you point that thing!” A voice cracked followed by the sound of a thud. A small feline lay on the ground dazed. “You caused me to trip”
Lunera looked around “On the air?” The wolf didn’t seem amused. “She’s gotten worse.”
Awkwardly, the short feline stood up and attempted to make herself presentable. “So our fears have been confirmed?” Her large pointed ears stood tall in question. One of them twitched in anticipation.
“I just wish there was something I could do Lily!” Lunera replied. “Maybe if I--”
“Lunera” she interrupted in a harsh whisper.”Right now you need to worry about yourself!” Lily’s bright amber eyes locked directly with Lunera’s.
“What do you mean?”
“Once Chile discovers the truth--” The sound of metal on the stone floor interrupted Lily. Both of them gazed down the hall but could not make out a shape. “These area never fails to creep me out” she muttered a bit on edge. She turned her amber gaze back on the wolf’s. “You’ll be in a lot of danger Lunera.”
“Are you questioning my loyalty?” Lunera challenged, her tone cutting like a blade.
Lily paused for a moment. She drew her head back in ponder. “I’m just concerned your past.. Actions… or affiliations will create tension in times to come.”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about” Lunera growled. She turned away from the cat and started to walk again.
“Yes I do!” Lily was nearly shouting. She ran in front of Lunera blocking her path. “Why do you think covered for you while you and Cynthia were--”
“Don’t mention that name!” Lunera snapped. She lowered her voice, “At least that loudly. Do you want Chile to hear us? That will only fuel her insanity.”
Lily started to speak but bit her lip almost immediately.
“Just give me time.”
“And the past is gone. And pretty soon that will be you.”
“No it won’t.”
A large muscular animal wearing a helmet entered the dim light emanating from the lantern. “Lunera, you’re needed down in the nursery.”
“Yes sir.” Lunera replied. She turned to look at Lily one last time. “Disagree all you want but I know what I’m doing”
Lily watched her friend leave with the guard. Her eyes remained mixed with fear and anger. “Just because things are alright now, doesn’t mean they’ll stay that way!” She yelled. “Times are changing Lunera; storms are surging, upon you, a second era of doom. And you, although indirectly, fuel the deadly North wind.”
