Prologue
A teenage girl stood with her arms crossed, staring at the new king of Rovaria as she waited for him to respond. She blew her dirty blond hair out of her face, risking a look at the throne room around her. The king may be her brother, but that didn't mean he wouldn't hesitate to kill her if needed. She smiled, knowing that the guards scattered around the room where mostly there because of her. Her brother may have the power that came with the silver ring he wore on his left hand, but she knew that part of him still feared her abilities.
"Are you sure we can't just kill the gifteds and get the book ourselves?" The king asked, impatient as usual.
"There's four," she pointed out. "Five if you include the spy that won't hesitate to turn on us. They can be powerful. For now the people of Rovaria fear them, but if we make a wrong move, you can risk losing your throne. Besides, we can't leave this already unstable kingdom."
He nodded but looked unsatisfied, hating whenever his twin was right. "I guess." She noticed he was twisting the ring on his finger, something he tended to do ever since he got his hands on it.
'You're nothing without it, she thought bitterly, remembering a time where she was above him. But she plastered a smile on her face. "Trust me, dear brother. Everything's going according to plan. They're looking for the book already. Soon it'll be in our hands. And when it is, I'll take the gifteds back to you. Then you can have whatever you want from them."
He nodded again. "You do realize what would happen if you even think about turning against me," he said suddenly, probably paranoid after she mentioned their unloyal spy.
She kept smiling, though her hand trailed down to her belt. "Of course." I'd like to see you try anything.
"Good." The boy flicked a hand. "You are dismissed."
I'm already getting tired of this, she thought, thinking maybe she should hire an assassin after all and try to become queen. Maybe after the riots die down and the economy stabilizes.
"Oh, and one last thing," he said as she was leaving.
She turned around. "Yes?" Maybe it was disrespectful, but it would be downright humiliating to call her brother "Your Majesty," so she was avoiding it whenever possible.
"When you get what we need out of this little group of gifted people..." maybe it was her imagination, but she could've sworn there was a hint of insanity in his eyes, especially for such a young age. "They're already enough trouble. After we get the book, I don't want any of their powers. Just their heads."
