1952 years before the Dragonet Prophecy…
The stars glittered in a pitch-black sky above the continent of Pyrrhia. The water glittered as the waves tossed and turned. The frozen dirt on the edge of the Ice Kingdom was as cold as ever, Visionseeker thought as she walked along the shore.
She was on a special spying mission on behalf of Queen Futurefollower. She had been at this exact spot before; on other missions the queen had sent her on.
Her black scales stood out entirely against the white-ish backdrop. The only thing that hid her was the darkness of the night.
She was on this mission with another NightWing. Starwatcher was following her, not trying to be silent or sneaky at all. The frozen dirt crunched annoyingly beneath his feet, driving Visionseeker crazy.
“You’ve been here before, how much longer till’ we get to the Ice Kingdom?” Starwatcher asked.
“How about you be quiet and find out for yourself?” She snapped. Visionseeker was tired of his questions.
He huffed and said, “You’re really mean.”
“You’re just annoying, really.” She hissed back.
He gasped, clearly offended. They continued onward in silence, besides the crunch of the dirt. Eventually, they made it to the border of the Ice Kingdom.
“You stay here.” She said.
“But the queen said for us to go on this mission together.”
“I don’t care. Now don’t move until I come back.”
She trudged away, leaving Starwatcher behind. It got much colder here, as she was now officially inside of the Ice Kingdom. She couldn’t go too far, as she’d probably freeze before dawn. She usually just looked around for some dragons patrolling around and eavesdropped until she gathered some useful intel, and then started making the long journey back to the secret NightWing island.
She started searching around, until she finally found a pair of IceWings flying around. They were close to the ground, so she walked behind them, since if she flew, they would probably hear her wingbeats.
The two ice dragons were flying in silence. She sighed inwardly, realizing it would be a while until they started talking, and that they might not even talk about any IceWing secrets. Visionseeker decided to just follow them until they did, not wanting to look for another patrol.
One of them started looking around and started turning around to look behind him as he flew. Visionseeker quickly ducked behind a large rock pile, but she wasn’t fast enough.
He hissed something to the other soldier, who nodded and continued flying, while the other flew down to examine the rocks.
Visionseeker stayed as still as she could, not daring to breathe. She thought she was in the clear when he turned around to fly back to the other IceWing, and she sat down, and realized quickly that the crunch of the snow would let him know she was there.
He flew back and peered around the rocks. Visionseeker tried to look like simply a part of the shadows.
“Hello?” He called. “Anybody there?”
The ice dragon started examining the shadows, and she realized that he would find her soon enough. After a moment he hissed under his breath, “NightWing.”
He picked up a spear he had laid on the ground, which Visionseeker hadn’t even realized he had. He jabbed at where she was, and the attack hit her stomach. She yelped and he said, “You can stop hiding! I know you’re there, NightWing!”
She crept out of hiding and he froze up. He quickly shook himself and hissed. “What’s your name?”
She hesitated contemplating if she should tell him. “Visionseeker.” She said, realizing she didn’t have much of a choice. “You?”
He stepped back, startled that she had asked. “I don’t need to tell you.
The IceWing took a moment to examine her. Suddenly a vision flared in her mind. She didn’t get them often, so she didn’t even think about her power most of the time.
As the vision faded, she realized that this encounter would be the start of something that would impact both of their futures forever.
