Softpaw blinked at Leafstorm with cheerful surprise at the kindness of her mentor.
"I did - I'll do my best to wake up on time from now on,"
She mewed. She knew this was a tough promise to keep because of how naturally fatigued she would become at times which was an unfortunate mystery to her; yet she felt she should return the benevolence Leafstorm had shown her.
Then Softpaw asked,
"What are we doing today?"

Leafstorm chuckled at the apprentice's humbleness. "Well, today we are going to find some aboveground herbs. In particular, comfrey and chervil." she informed the young she-cat. "While we're up there, we can wake up the dog patrol and tell them that it's okay to go on border patrol." she said softly. "Alright, let's get going shall we?"

"Yeah!"
Softpaw mewed, admittedly very excited for the trip they would be making.

Leafstorm nodded gently at Softpaw and then clambered through the tunnels from her den. She peeked her head out from the ground and noticed Ruby nearby. "Hey, Rubs! How are you this morning?" she called to the dachshund.

Ruby's ears perked up when she heard the she-cat's voice. "Oh, I am doing fine today thank you! Are you doing well?" she asked in turn to be polite.

Leafstorm climbed out of the hole and shook off her pelt. Usually she didn't mind having all the dirt on her fur, since they've lived underground for a long time. "Why yes, I'm just taking my apprentice out to find herbs. Listen, is Bone awake? If he is, he has permission to go ahead and organize a patrol." she informed the black and orange dog.

"Sure thing!" Ruby smiled and scampered away to see if Bone really was awake.

Striker padded over, having been woken up by the chatter. "Morning," He greeted the two cats cheerfully. "Have fun on your herb hunt!"

Orchid woke up and stretched herself out. Blinking her eyes open and coming to the realization that there was nothing to do, she groomed the moss out of her pelt, and then started nosing through the herb stores.

Leafstorm, although pretty far away, called back to Striker. "Thank you! Have a good patrol!" she said to him and beckoned her apprentice to follow her.

Striker grinned and lifted his tail in recognition before lowering it and trotting after Ruby. A patrol would be nice. He needed to stretch his legs.

Ruby smiled at Striker and looked for the other dogs so they could organize the patrol. "How do you feel this morning?" she asked him sweetly.

"Pretty good, pretty good," Striker replied in an light-hearted tone. "Nothing too disastrous has happened yet, so I'm not feeling too shabby. How about you?"

Softpaw looked behind her shoulder at Striker in the distance in awe; as a relatively new apprentice, she didn't see the dogs a whole lot, and they were a rather new and unique thing to her.
Finally she returned to looking ahead of her and continued to follow her mentor. She began to marvel at the aboveground undergrowth, which was also an unfamiliar sight to her.
"Leafstorm?" Softpaw asked, "How do you usually identify chervil and comfrey?"

Leafstorm looked at her apprentice. "Chervil is nothing but green leaves, while comfrey has pink buds on it. Chervil is used for infected wounds. Comfrey can help mend broken bones and sometimes helps with wounds as well." she explained. "It is very easy to tell them apart.

Ruby gave a happy bark and bounced up in the air once. "Feelin' energized! Let's see if we can get some others to go with us!" she said with a grin.

"Ooh," Softpaw whispered, "What do they smell like?"
After a second of asking the question, Softpaw realized how weird that must've sounded, but she'd overheard other warriors or apprentices complaining about the strength of the scents of certain herbs, which is what roused her curiosity.
