Goldenblaze got to the den. She padded inside, and waited for her apprentice to arrive. She pulled out the most basic and importent herbs she knew - cobwebs, poppy seeds and goldenrod - and recalled each of their uses, before turning to her apprentice who had just walked through the door. "Ready to start?" she asked.

Rainpaw nodded. "You'd bet I am!" She smiled and walked into the den. Rainpaw sat down and looked at the herbs that Goldenblaze had by her paws.

Goldenbalze:
"Lets start with the most simple herb. Cobwebs." she said, in a tone filled with patience, very unusual for her. Inwardly, she was yowling and wanting to claw the smile right off of Rainpaw's face. It didn't show through. "Can you guess what they're for?"

Rainpaw: She narrowed her eyes with thought. They wouldn't be eaten... Then it came to her. "To stop bleeding!" Her eyes were filled with determination and she hoped her mentor could see how much she wanted this, and how she was not going to give up.

Goldenblaze:
She was surprised for half a heartbeat. Rainpaw's smarter than I thought... I don't know how to.. urm.. she thought, her thoughts trailing off "Very good, Rainpaw." she praised, as much as it was against her nature "They can commonly be found anywhere, but look where there are lots of trees for the best results. Now," she said, then pointed with her tail to the little black seeds "Poppy seeds." she said "What are they used for?"

Rainpaw: She studied the seeds. "Poppy seeds..." The name was familiar, though she didn't know from where. Then she remembered when, as a kit, she had been playing with Applepaw and had gotten hurt. Her leg had ached a lot that day. She remembered eating something called a 'poppy seed' and later falling asleep. "To make cats sleepy?" she mewed, hoping she was right. "But I feel like it has another use... Hmm..." She wracked her brain but couldn't think of it. Instead, she wisely sniffed the seed, storing its scent in her memory.

Goldenblaze:
"Good. You're half right, it can also be used as a painkiller, but not too many. One to three seeds is enough," she said. "Now, onto the final herb before we go out to gather some - goldenrod. This is the hardest one. What is it for?"

Rainpaw: "Err.." She never remembered being treated with goldenrod. "I'm sorry-- I don't recall being treated with it. I don't know." She sounded stupid and she felt like she was being beat over the head and was already imagining her mentor yowling at her about how stupid she was and...

((Remember when I said she wasn't an optimist? Well...))

Goldenblaze:
"You've never heard of this, I take it? Well, good news is, I don't even thnik Windstar knows the use of goldenrod. It helps with cuts that are bleeding, before the cobwebs. I'm glad you've never needed it yet, you're too young." she said. "You chew goldenrod up into a poultice and place it on wounds. Let's go!"

Rainpaw:
"Oh, okay." She sniffed it and smiled. "Let's go get some herbs!" She looked more enthusiastic then any cat you'd ever seen about herbs.

(YUSSSSS! LET'S GO FIND METAL!!!!)

Goldenblaze:
She nodded to her apprentice, feeling fuzzy inside. So this is what having a friend... and being nice feels like. I could get used to this! she thought as she and her apprentice headed off. She heard a rustle in the bushes. "did you hear that?" she said, pausing and turning to her apprentice.

Rainpaw: "I did." She let her ears swivel. "It's coming from that bush!" She gestured towards a big-leafed holly thicket. She stepped closer to the bush. "Should we confront it, Goldenblaze?"

Goldenblaze:
"Yes, you were trained not to let any cat know of us and leave, were you not?" she said, then turned to the shadow. "We know that you're there, come out!" she demanded to the cat in the bushes.

And an impossible seeming cat came out - a cat made of steel!

Rainpaw: Rainpaw shifted. "Well, I, uh.." Then she spotted it. A metal cat. It was official. She had lost her mind. "Err... Umm.... Well... I've officially lost my mind!"

Goldenblaze:
"Along with.. wait - you see a metal cat too?" she asked, startled that she wasn't insane.

Metal:
"No, you have not. I am Stee- er.. Metal, and as I am demonstrating now, I can turn to metal." he said, then shifted back. "I come bearing the secrets of a faraway clan." he announced. He could see these cats weren't normal rogues.
