The sun rises over the town of Dustdevil on a lovely weekend. The school year is just about to start.
Star mixed up a café au lait for a regular. They took advantage of the policy about drinks the coffee shop offered: Employees can make two drinks a day for themselves for free. Soy milk with a ‘few’ pumps of vanilla was the only thing he made with that benefit aside from his partner’s favorite galão. The usual(jerkish) customer didn’t even bother to leave a tip. That idiot never tipped anyone who worked here. No consideration whatsoever.
He slipped on some headphones and turned on a playlist she’d compiled over the years and waited for the register worker to tell them what they needed to mix.
|||
They were running. Their partner was working the morning shift and Caoilfhionn had reading to do, so why not spend some time in the coffee shop? The only problem?
There was a dog racing after her. She was usually pretty good with dogs, but this husky seemed set on biting her. Caoilfhionn inwardly laughed at the silliness of the situation. Normally Star was bad with canines. They eventually came to the door and hoped that the strong scent of coffee would drive it off. According to some of her siblings, coffee shops had too strong a smell in wolf form to be in, and if a werewolf’s nose was about as sensitive as a dog’s(according to the internet)…
The husky left. Thankfully. She sighed in relief and immediately went to the register to ask for her usual. When the register worker gave them a look of confusion, Caoilfhionn had a feeling that they were new because she was a regular. The new worker tapped Star’s shoulder. When he caught sight of her, he immediately mixed up the proper drink and quietly said, “This is on my drink limit.” They handed her the galão and smiled.
Caoilfhionn couldn’t help but giggle to herself as she took a seat and pulled out their laptop.

(No problem. Hope you're doing alright
HAGON DERRICK
Hagon's alarm went off at a time that seemed much earlier than necessary, and he groaned, realizing he was starting school again. He glanced at the empty side of his bed and pictured Lucy. She had never been a morning person, so she would no doubt be just as annoyed as he was. He sighed, picking up his phone and swiping to dismiss the alarm, then slid off his bed and began searching around for something to wear.
JARED KENDRICK
The sound of Jared's alarm startled him out of his sleep, making him wonder if he had even slept at all. It felt like mere minutes ago he had been laying there, haunted by the memories of being a lab experiment. He rolled over onto his side to turn it off, then laid on his back again and stared at the ceiling for a few moments, before getting up and grabbing clothes, then hopping into the shower.
JASON KENDRICK
Jason had been awake a bit longer than Jared, preparing breakfast since Jared had a bottomless pit of a stomach. He had grabbed some for himself, then got ready for work. He waited for Jared to get out of the shower and watched him eat, grab his medication, then got into his black Jeep—which had seen better days, the paint on a particular spot on the rim being scratched off from the time he accidentally gotten too close to the curb—and drove to the school, parking near the front so he could wait until everyone had gone inside before Jared could go in due to the excessive noise of the other students. After Jared went in, he drove to work and parked in the back, slipping inside to clock in just before his shift started. “Morning.” He said quietly to the cashier, before going to mix drinks.
(I've honestly never noticed that all three characters have last names ending in Rick XD

Ricco was mixed about starting the school year. The same kind of feeling he had since moving here from the sea. Excited, because it was a land school but bummed because it was school. He had been dropped off at the highschool by one of his older siblings. He could spot familiarities that his previous school had to this one, a typical highschool. Just minus the levels of H2O and fish. His attire was bright, neon green shorts with a shirt and flip flops which were the kind that strapped over the foot. Land people, mainly humans had… a lot of shoes which both fascinated yet confused him. So far in the few weeks he’s been on land, he’s managed to get the handle of flip flops and that was it. He just didn’t like the feel of other shoes at the moment. He missed his fins though, swimming to places. It was a lot faster than human feet. He had slathered on some lotion before he left to help keep him from drying out. A pack slung over his shoulder and a piece of paper in hand that had his class information on there, naturally he went off to his first class of the day.
Elaine Sterling
Elaine felt like she was going down the rabbit hole with coming here. She had inherited a little place in town for a distant relative that had passed. It was an old building, the kind that was a store beneath and a house- or well apartment above it. Sure, it was still standing and structural sound. But the place was mess like a tornado had swept through it. Only a few hours ago she had just arrived to Dust Devil, taking a taxi here from the airport. It was a quaint little town. But it was a headache in what she was having to go through, the amount of stuff was almost like a dragon’s hoard. She even found a taxidermy of a chicken in a drawer. At that point she had called it break time and headed to the local coffee place to get something caffeinated to keep her awake. She wouldn’t be surprised if she looked like the walking dead; slept in clothes that consisted of jeans and a shirt, mix-matched socks. Light bags under eyes. She had taken a nap in the airplane but jet lag was still present.
(lol that’s funny)

(I’m alright lol)
Star watched their new employee(he identified as he/him according to his name tag) first awkwardly return Jason’s greeting and then stumble through the introduction to the cafe, “Uh, hi, I’m Herbal Remedy- I MEAN, uh, welcome to Herbal Remedy. Can I… get you something?”
That poor teen. The regulars would tear him apart. However, Star had never seen this tall person around. They weren’t quite as tall as Hrafn, but they were taller than Arya. It scared her.
They needed to call those two; Star wrote it down on the notes app of his phone.
|||
What… did this even mean? Caoilfhionn bit back a scream and texted Cian. He only responded, ‘lmfao gl’. That infuriating… When they got their hands on him, they swore that great harm would come to him.
The galão was sweet on her tongue. It was by far the only thing keeping her from shouting into the void. That, and Star, who was currently writing something on their phone. Caoilfhionn had seen their naming convention once, and if they ever decided to have a kid, Star was not naming them.

((Glad to hear it
JASON
Jason watched the new guy awkwardly mess up the introduction, the nervousness practically emanate off of him, making his own stomach turn. He waited for the order to come through, the customer's thoughts filled with amusement. They took a second to realize what they wanted, the train of thought for the order having gone completely off the tracks, then when they settled on their order, he started prepping the ingredients, then when it was said out loud, he got started.

Elaine yawned, covering it with her hand and adjusting her backpack over her shoulder. A baseball cap on her head that hid the mess of her hair. She stepped into the coffee shop, listening the bell above ding as she opened the door. It seemed that the shop was already busy with some customers already and people working. It makes sense, it was the start of the school year so people would be wanting a quick coffee before work or school. Or in her case trying to combat jet lag. She stepped in line behind a few customers, waiting patiently to do her order. This place was quaint with a nice atmosphere.

Caoilfhionn heard someone sit down next to her. They looked up to see Star laying her head on their shoulder and leaning slightly against them. The brown-eyed demigirl quietly asked, “Do you need me to talk or listen or…?”
“…” Star remained silent. He didn’t even bother to sign, so Caoilfhionn simply let them rest on her.
She was content to figure out this assignment and sometimes watch her almost sleeping partner, and Star likely was too.

Three nondescript people are in line before Elaine. In order from first to least, one will be annoyed at the cashier, the second will be deeply saddened in general and the third will be kinder and understanding.

Jason watched as the new guy struggled to take the order of a customer. Their thoughts were filled with frustration, and even though the cashier wasn't also an empath, he seemed to get the message. After a short bit of back and forth, the cashier told Jason the next order, which he got started on. He felt like there was a lump in his throat as the customer left, impatiently tapping their foot as they waited by the back wall of the store, and noticed that the next person in line was upset about something. The glimpses of their thoughts that he could see were filled with loneliness and hurt. He glanced up at them, with an unrealistic hope that the vision he was seeing through the mind of the new guy and what he would see through his own eyes would be different. He was obviously mistaken. He took mental note of the customer so if he sees them again, he can be sure to check in on them. He then shook his head a couple times as if to shake off the thoughts and refocus on what he was doing, coming back to reality and realizing that the new guy was telling him the order. Thankfully, though he had missed it, between the thoughts of the customer and the cashier, he was able to piece it together. He heard the machine go off, signaling that the previous order was ready, placing it on the counter for the angry customer to retrieve, watching as they snatched it off the counter and stormed out the door, then started the next order. While he completed it, he listened as the new guy took the order of the third person in line. He once again stumbled over his words, apologizing, but they gave an awkward laugh and told him it was no problem. While the warmth they put off was refreshing, between the anger and sadness, it was overshadowed, causing a feeling of discomfort in his stomach. He slipped the case to his wireless headphones out of his pocket and placed on in his ear, listening for the chime that signalled it was connected, then resumed the hard rock he had been listening to on the way over, attempting to focus on a guitar riff to distract from the discomfort of being around so many people. 'I should really pursue a job without customer service.' He thought, putting on a fresh pair of gloves—it was either that, or risk touching people's bare skin if he bumped into someone or had an awkward hand touch moment when giving someone their drink, so he just told his supervisor he preferred that over hand washing.

Elaine waited patiently as each customer got their turn in ordering. She took a forward with her cane as she stepped up to the counter. She was tired from the jet lag, so she naturally ordered herself something to help keep her awake; black tea. She didn’t like coffee but she liked tea so she figured this would be the best. Or she would just do coffee if it was the only thing to keep her going. She also got a chocolate muffin. She wondered if Terrence ever came to this coffee shop, it wasn’t that far of a walk from the building. She first needed to get a kind of plan started with the place she inherited. Get stuff organized and… go from there. She waited patiently for her drink, she didn’t have anyway to be at the moment and she wasn’t all that busy.

Star felt Caoilfhionn nudge her gently. Already? They smiled at her and nodded in the direction of the counter. He heaved a sigh and then lightheartedly muttered, “How dare you try to help me keep my job?” Caoilfhionn’s beatific smile and giggle at the absurdity of the sentence gave them the drive to get up and go to the register, where the cashier nervously asked for him to get more white chocolate chip cookies. He could’ve sworn…
No matter. The jet-haired youth went to the back and got a tray of them in the display cabinet and checked to make sure the heating was working. Their manager had mentioned getting a magically-fueled one, but development of magical products was slow and would probably require energy from the employees.
They looked around the shop. No one was there except for the manager who had been there with her and the new guy since the beginning, What was their name? Oh, right, it was Gabby. Speaking of which, Gabby pulled them aside to talk ‘to’(Star preferred the term ‘at’) them.
“Star, can you train Adrian? Register’s a hard job.”
They shook their head. “I mix drinks. Training’s more your job.” Gabby couldn’t argue with them too much because the moment Star quit, the moment they’d lose their now most senior employee. And Star had almost quit several times. It made them chuckle to think about.

Jason mixed the black tea for Elaine, placing it on the counter, then got the muffin out of the display case, placing it in a paper bag. He glanced out the window, wondering if anyone else was coming.
Hagon looked around, trying to find where his first class was. He double checked the room and building, then went and sat near the back since the front row was almost always too close for comfort due to his hearing.
Jared made his way to his first class of the day, that being math. Why did he have to start out with math of all things? He was already tired enough having gone to bed at 1 in the morning, definitely too tired for math. He caught a glimpse of a guy wearing bright green shorts, flip flops, and a t-shirt. Either he got ready last minute, or he didn't care about what people thought. Either way, he wasn't judging, just noticing. He was walking quickly, wanting to get out of the echoey hallway as soon as possible, and he had a pair of noise cancelling headphones on, which was definitely helping with the amount of people(though any amount of people was too many, really), but the different scents of people mixing together was slightly overwhelming as well. Why did people need to wear such strong perfume?

Ricco had noticed many of the students all had their own thing, or style going on. He was grateful this wasn’t a uniform one like his previous school. There was this one guy he saw with noise-canceling headphones and walking at a brisk pace. All he figured was perhaps the student was late or something. He eventually got to his classroom that on his paper list. Honestly this surface world was pretty cool, it had things that his world didn’t. It was less saltwater which he wasn’t as accustomed too. After spending a few weeks before school above land, he wasn’t gawking around like a tourist anymore but there was still this level of excitement. The chatter of the students was about the same, expect there was less whistles and clicks from sealife and no floating jellyfish through the rooms. Yeah the windows were another thing too here that was strange. When his skin begin to feel itchy, he took out some lotion from his bag. Applying it to his hands. The surface world was dry, something he was still getting use to and the lotion was a special kind for those that weren’t normally surface-dwelling. It had a salty smell to it, kind of like seaweed or kelp which reminded him of back home.
Elaine Sterling
Elaine pondered about either staying here or going back to her place, she ultimately decided to just hang out here. It was less chaotic, neater and a place she could think without feeling claustrophobic. “Thank you Jason.” She said, a quick glance at the ID on the uniform as she took her drink of black tea and a chocolate muffin. Her mind was reeling a bit almost like a gerbil on a wheel with the things she’s seen so far in the inherited building; lots of books, decorative items, figurines, statues, plants. But she couldn’t get the taxidermy chicken that she found in a drawer of all things. She wasn’t even sure where to begin with those kinds of things. She took a seat at one of the tables that was empty for now, placing her things down. It was nice to be able to relax for a moment. She took a sip of her tea, musing about the possibility of anyone knowing anything about her deceased relative, perhaps get some more insight. Other than being a collector it seemed of everything under the sun that wasn’t stapled down. Maybe she needed someone to help her sort out things, she hadn’t made much of a dent in the place and at this rate it might take her the full year just to get things figured out.

Jason nodded in acknowledgment, replying with “Have a good one.” cleaning some crumbs off the counter to keep himself busy. She was thinking about a lot of things, a deceased relative, a bunch of random objects she had found, including a taxidermied chicken—strange. She seemed like an interesting individual.

Elaine sipped at her tea for a bit at the table, having taken a notebook out of her bag. Going over the list that she had made of what needed be done. Besides organizing, cleaning and making sure the place she got wasn’t on the verge of being torn down. From what she gathered it had good bones and seemed sturdy enough. But the place filled to the brim with stuff and things. Some junk, some value- if anything she wonders if Terrance was a dragon because it would explain the dragon’s hoard of things in the house. She ate a bit of her muffin as she dotted down some things in the notebook. She wondered where she might get some help maybe. She was new in town, not knowing anyone here at all. A slight frown on her lips as she chewed on the end of her pencil a bit in thought. Although at the end of the day, it would take her a long while to get it done on her own but now the question was of where to start.

The first day of high school is fine... for humans. Lark Dresden did not properly process certain documents regarding its supernatural students, names, accommodations, and classes, so Ricco and Jared are put into a few classes together for the first few weeks: First Aid, Home Economics, and Precalculus.
Meanwhile, Herbal Remedy receives a few rambunctious customers; a family of werewolves who often visit Dustdevil. Let's just say... no one enjoys dealing with them.
