Nettlepelt motioned for Hazelpaw to follow her so that she could give her a brief hunting lesson before she let her hunt alone. The she-cat was grateful that Larchstar had allowed her to join the patrol, for she enjoyed her apprentice's presence and she enjoyed training her. Hazelpaw needed hunting practice and more patrol experience anyways, so this was killing two birds with one stone by her tagging along for a hunting patrol. She smiled as she waited for Hazelpaw to come with her. ( beech)

Hazelpaw padded after her mentor, her tail up and her eyes shining. "I'm so excited!" she yipped, her tail wagging quickly and uncontrollably. She half thought that her excitement, that come off of her in waves, would scare away all of the prey in their territory. ( ✞~Spottedleaf ~✞)

"Keep it down, Hazelpaw," Nettlepelt warned. "You don't want to scare all te prey away." She liked her apprentice's enthusiasm, but too much of it out here would startle the prey and make hunting a harder task for the day. ( beech)

"Sometimes I dream about being in the forest, hunting with Brackenpaw, then I wake up and the pain in my leg reminds me that I'll never hunt again. It feels too much to bear. I have to pretend that maybe, one day, I'll be able to hunt again." -Cinderpelt
Hazelpaw calmed down, her shoulders relaxing and her tail sagging, though the tip flicked occasionally. She took in a deep breath, settling herself down. She blushed and looked down. (✞~Spottedleaf ~✞)

Hazelpaw closed her eyes and opened her jaws to scent the air. She inhaled deeply, and sighed deeply, looking down at the ground, disappointed. "I don't smell anything..." she mewed, embarrassed and ashamed. (✞~Spottedleaf ~✞)

Larchstar watched the apprentice Waterpaw padded back silently after a short while Hazelpaw looking down still. He dropped a vole.. Waterpaw padded up to Hazelpaw "you know this area doesn't have the best source of prey Up a bit has plenty of roots it might be easier to find something there" Waterpaw mewed. Remembering what Larchstar had said to him when he was still a young apprentice he hoped Nettlepelt wouldn't be mad. ♡☯Cherrymist☯♡Mothfur agreed "Brairfeather if you don't mind I am hoping to show them another good tactic starting with a classic Hunting crouch" Mothfur meowed. It was a simple but pretty good tactic most young apprentices learn it started with a crouch good for hunting birds.

((Oh, just to clear it up, I was not insinuating a lack of food, just that Hazelpaw couldn't sense the prey.))

Nettlepelt frowned at her apprentice's answer. She scented the air herself to find that while there was not much, there was a faint scent of squirrel close by. "The scent is faint, but it's there," she told Hazelpaw. "What is that scent?" ( beech)

Hazelpaw sniffed the air but she couldn't distinguish anything besides the faint smell of an herb (that she didn't know the name of, but was tangy smelling) and the dirt. She looked down at her paws, her pelt prickling with anxiety. She was a decent fighter, but apparently she couldn't smell anything very well. She sniffed the air again. (✞~Spottedleaf ~✞)

Larchstar sighed she new the apprentice was trying to help but when she had done it she didn't realize it was the wrong answer. She guessed it was her fault that he had suggested it now. Larchstar had awhile back picked up the squirrel scent it was faint like Nettlepelt had said but it was still there...(prey tends to have a musky scent herbs having a Tang or bitter scent snakes I would assume are bitter since they have no fur and cats show no interest in eating them)
