I've been studying Japanese for several years and someday hope to be able to become a translator. One thing I do as practice is reading Japanese news articles.
I will be using this thread as a commitment to try and practice translating Japanese a little bit each day. I will probably stick to translating news articles for now.
I'm not expecting there to be any replies to this thread, but if anyone does want to practice Japanese, please feel free to comment! I can converse in Japanese and would love to speak with you.

Ripple how confident do you feel about your abilities to translate a whole novel
Once every 17 years I emerge from the life-giving earth and then die, just like a cicada. But instead of screaming, I come on here and make a handful of quality Poasts(TM). If you remember interacting with me back in 2012-14, PM me and maybe we could talk on Discord
Ripple how confident do you feel about your abilities to translate a whole novel
Quite low, sadly I've tried translating part of a novel before and some of it was easy, some of it made sense with a bit of effort, and some of it I really wasn't sure what was being said. That's partially because I don't have a lot of experience, but novels in particular can be difficult to translate because you lose a lot of the nuance with translation. But the main reason I probably couldn't do it is because I'm bad at seeing projects through to the end, and novels are quite lengthy.
That said... I'd love to translate novels someday. If I had the attention span and skill level for it, that would be my dream job
Minato, Tokyo Website Now Viewable in 108 Languages
There are approximately 17,000 foreigners from 130 different countries living in the Minato ward of Tokyo. Upon investigation by the Minato ward, it was found that many of the people who visited sites like the official Minato Ward website were looking up topics such as vaccination parking, education for children, or trash disposal methods.
As a result, the Minato ward has developed an AI to translate the website so information can be viewed in many different languages. Up until now, the website had been available in just 4 languages: Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean. This number has since been increased to a total of 108, including Ukrainian and Arabic. Upon opening the website, it will automatically translate the text to whichever language you use on your smartphone or computer.
Minato ward commented saying, “We are now able to translate into many of the languages of the foreigners who live in Minato ward. We hope many people will use our website.”

According to the UN’s World Food Program and others on the 4th this month, there were approximately 193 million people in the world in danger due to the lack of food last year. With an increase of 40 million from the previous year, this is the largest number ever recorded so far.
Approximately 70% of those afflicted are members of countries and areas in a continual state of war or conflict, such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, and Ethiopia.

Upcycling” Discarded Items into Edible and Usable Ones
“Upcyling” refers to the act of converting discarded items into an item of value. Now there is an increase in the amount of companies upcycling things such as food.
The company Oisix Ra Daichi has begun making food products out of the discarded portions of vegetables and fruit rinds. Some of the products they sell include jam made out of banana peels, and chips fried in eggplant stems. The store opened and began selling these products in Tokyo at the end of April. Although the product is a bit pricey, it is being bought by people who want to prioritize their food.
The company Ito-En is using straws made from paper at a coffee shop. Discarded coffee bean shells are mixed into the paper to create the straw. By creating two paper straws, they can focus on reducing the trash produced from the beans in one cup of coffee
In order to prioritize the environment, there may be a rise in companies upcycling food.
New Sensor That Allows Screens to be Operated without Direct Touch
The company Japan Display has created a sensor that can be used to operate screens without directly touching them.
The sensor is a clear slate that is used by placing it above the screen of a device. When a finger is moved within proximity of the screen, the sensor can feel the weak electricity between the finger and the screen, which allows the user to operate the device.
Japan Display is thinking of using this sensor in places such as restaurants and government offices. As of April, this sensor is being used in a library in Tottori prefecture.
An individual within the company stated, “Due to the increasing amount of people who have said they don’t want to touch screens because of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, we thought about a sensor that could be placed over the machines and devices we currently use. We hope to make the sensor even easier to use in the future.”
I thought this article was pretty cool. I hope this technology is efficient and becomes widespread. It mentions COVID as a reason for inventing this, but if we used more stuff like this it could prevent the spread of a lot more germs.
Major League Ohtani Shohei’s 99th Homerun was His First Grand Slam
Major League Baseball star Ohtani Shohei made an appearance in the match between the Angels and the Rays on May 9th.
During the match, Ohtani hit two home runs. He had not hit any home runs in the past 9 matches.
The second home run occurred with the bases loaded, resulting in a Grand Slam. For Ohtani, who entered the Major Leagues from Japanese professional, this was his first Grand Slam. It was also his 99th home run since entering the Major Leagues.
Among Japanese players in Major League baseball, only two have hit over 100 home runs: Matsui Hideki and Ichiro. After one more home run, Ohtani will have reached 100 as well.
Wow, this one was hard to translate lol. I know nothing about baseball so I had to some research to understand some of the content. For some reason I didn't even put two and two together to realize "home run with bases loaded" is called a Grand Slam.... rip

Gigantic Black Hole in Center of Milky Way Galaxy Captured for First Time
A gigantic black hole located in the heart of the Milky Way, a galaxy that includes our Solar System, has been photographed for the first time. Although black hole do not emit light, the image taken of the black hole known as a “Sagittarius A*” shows a bright ring of light emerging from around the black hole. This light is bent due to the black hole’s gravity. Regarding Sagittarius A, astronomers claim it is 4 million times more massive than the sun. Sagittarius A is approximately 27,000 light years away from earth. Our Solar System, located in one of the branches of the Milky Way, is far from the center. Looking up at the night sky from Earth, the appearance of Sagittarius A is said to look like a donut placed around the moon.

Footage of Flying Fish Soaring for 45 Seconds Becomes New Guinness World Record
A Flying Fish is a fish that can soar above the ocean by spreading its fins. In a television program by the NHK in 2008, a video of a Flying Fish soaring for 45 seconds was recorded. The flying time of the fish in this video became a Guinness world record.
The individual who took this video was on board a boat headed towards Yakushima of the Kagoshima prefecture. In the recording, the fish jumps out of the sea and, while turning left and right, keeps up with the boat moving at about 30 km per hour. Mid-flight, the fish hits its fins against the surface of the water, preventing it from falling.
Up until now, the record for longest flight time had been recorded at 42 seconds by an American researcher around 1920. The recording from NHK is 3 seconds longer.
The individual who recorded the video stated, “It flew for so long, I mistook it for a bird.”
lol... if you go to the article in the link, you can see the video of the flying fish. I love when news is so mundane like this. Like heck yeah, you go little fish.
Cats Can Understand the Names of Other Cats They Live with
A group including Kyoto University has done a study on whether cats can understand human words. When human babies are told words and shown corresponding pictures, the time they spend looking at the pictures increases if they don’t understand the word. In this study, they researched what happens with cats.
For this research, a total of 19 cats were collected from households that have 3 or more cats living together. First, they said the name of a cat they lived with, and then showed a picture of a different cat on the screen. The results showed that compared to when the name and picture matched, they looked at the incorrect pairings for an average of at least 1 second longer. The group has concluded that cats can understand the names of other cats they live with.
A person from the group stated, “Cats always try not to have much interest in humans, but it seems they are thinking and listening to us quite a bit.”
This one is too cute haha I am weak for cats. Also I'm fascinated by the notion that this person at the end of the article said "cats try not to have an interest in humans". Like the wording in Japanese implies cats are actively trying to ignore us lol. The same way I could say, "i'm trying to get up early every day to do exercise". I dunno there's just something so funny about the idea of cats being tsundere.
