Burying Items/Prey + Becoming an assistant

Hello again. I have a couple more questions. 

Are there any benefits to burying prey or items? Do they disappear after a certain amount of time if you don't bury them?

Also, can you become a medicine cat assistant and a deputy assistant, or must you choose one or the other?

I believe burying items prevents them from being able to be picked up by NPCs? Don't know for sure.

And yes you can be both assistants at the same time.
