I'm back at it again with another game review open for discussion. This time it's a game I have actually 100% completed recently. It's the sequel to my favorite robot-hunting game (Horizon Zero Dawn), Horizon Forbidden West. Starring our favorite red-head Aloy and more robots to destroy.
Gameplay: 9/10
Horizon Zero Dawn is hands down probably my favorite game ever in terms of gameplay. There is a surprising amount of dopamine to be had by smashing robots with a spear.
Horizon Forbidden West takes the mechanics we know and love from the original and provides a lot more options in combat than before. I think this provides the variety and challenges that will captivate a lot of people who try out the game.
For me personally, I like the simplicity of whacking things with my spear and shooting parts off with my bow and arrow. I'm basic, I know. But it's super fun and I don't get tired of it even after hours of the same thing.
My main qualm with the sequel is that stealth combat was significantly nerfed from the original, in a way that made it tedious rather than fun for me. It's pretty difficult to be stealthy in this game, which would be good if I enjoyed a constant challenge. but sometimes I just wanna throw a rock, have an unknowing machine walk right up to me as I hide in the grass, and take it down in a second before it even knows what happened.
Also, the controls can be a bit janky sometimes where precision is required and you're trying to move Aloy through a puzzle. That got super annoying at times.
Visuals: 10/10
The visuals in this game are stunning. I don't have anything to say about it other than that it's cool there is an option to switch between modes that optimize visuals vs performance.
Story: 7/10
Without going into spoilers, the plot in this game leaves... a bit to be desired. I wasn't entirely displeased with it but it wasn't enthralling like the plot of the first game. There were decisions that made my eyes roll at some points. But overall the plot was alright.
The characters however are very good. They're multi-dimensional and it's so easy to feel like you're really in the world talking with them. The cast and NPCs throughout the world are rich in diversity, which is a huge plus.
Sound: 7/10
I quite like the soundtrack of this game, enjoying many of the intense battle themes that arise when battling large machines/bosses. I can't think of any tracks that I didn't like or became annoying. However, it's not too memorable in my mind, and I probably wouldn't listen to the OST outside of the game.
Overall, really great game, I would definitely replay it, and I'm looking forward to the eventual 3rd installment in the series.
