For my fourth review in the lineup, I've selected a game I know NightShade likes since it's their avatar lol.
Bandori is a rhythm game you can play on your phone (or the Switch, if you live in Japan), that centers around 7 different "girl high school bands", each containing 5 members. They have their own aesthetics and different styles of music. Within the game there are backstories you can read, events you can participate in, and costumes to collect. But most importantly, new music is continuously added with beatmaps of various levels for you to try and full combo. Or just enjoy.
Story: 6/10
To be honest I don't read all the content in bandori. I've read the band stories and some of the events, but I don't generally keep up with it. The story is very slice-of-life and not too deep, but the characters are actually quite fleshed out for just being a rhythm game app. While I'm not hanging on the edge of my seat eagerly awaiting the next part of the story, among rhythm game fans I know many people think Bandori has one of the best stories and developed characters.
Sound: 10/10
Band music isn't for everyone, but I love the music in bandori. For me, this is one of the main reasons why I always come back to this game. I'm sure there's at least one song for everyone to be found here, there is SO much music. They make original music for the game, and they also do covers of popular anime themes, vocaloid songs, etc. Sometimes the covers are even better than the originals.
Not every song is great, but there is so much content here you can just ignore the ones you don't like and still have plenty of other songs to choose from.
Gameplay: 9/10
I've played a couple other rhythm games and Bandori will always be my favorite. It's got a simple setup but enough variation and difficulty levels that it doesn't get boring.
I have spent so many hours playing beatmaps in Bandori. It's fun, relaxing, and you get to listen to good music while doing it. The concept is so simple but so good. There's really nothing to say here other than it's like dancing with your fingers/thumbs. If that sounds fun to you, you'd like this.
My only gripe with Bandori is that it's hard to be a thumb player on high difficulty levels. Once you get into the level 28s and higher, it feels almost impossible to get full combos by playing with your thumbs. I have heard a couple other people say they've managed to do it, but I'm not sure if I'll ever reach that goal.
My favorite thing about Bandori is that even though it's a gacha game, the gameplay and your success in getting full combos relies on your skill instead of having good cards. So in that sense, it's very friendly to players who play for free.
Visuals: 7/10
The visuals are fine. The character designs are cute and the art looks good. However, it is kind of like a visual novel in that there are just character portraits and backgrounds, so it is not dynamic and the visuals alone do not provide much entertainment when you're reading the stories.
However the card art for four stars is absolutely gorgeous. So that's mainly where I give it a score on the higher end.
So altogether, I recommend this game to people who like music, exercising their fingers/thumbs, and adorable girls.
