Warning: there are some RWBY spoilers here
I have been watching RWBY since the first trailers were released, and I've been a pretty invested fan ever since then. Although the main medium for RWBY is animation, there have been 3 novels written to supplement the source material. Two of those three were following the story of Team CFVY in Vacuo after the fall of Beacon. I read After the Fall last year, and I just finished reading Before the Dawn this morning.
Plot: 8/10
If I didn't care about RWBY, there's no way I would have read this book. But I love RWBY and I wanted to find out what happened, so I did it. Lol.
After the Fall was better than Before the Dawn, but combined they succeeded in providing some context and presumably much needed setup for what is to come in the next volume of the RWBY show. The plot wasn't all that unique or groundbreaking, but as someone already invested in the world of RWBY, it was interesting to witness life and culture in Vacuo. Semblances are also
a big part of RWBY, and these books really showcased some interesting semblances that significantly impacted the story in interesting ways. But more than anything, I was just excited to read about another adventure taking place in Remnant and get immersed in the world-building that I think RWBY does well.
Characters: 6/10
To be honest I did not care about Team CFVY before reading these books. They had showed up a few times in volumes 2 and 3, but they didn't make a big impression on me.
After reading these books though, Fox has become one of my favorite RWBY characters. Yatsuhashi and Velvet have an extremely cute and sweet relationship and I think I ship them now. Coco is a lesbian and I know Carmine is evil but I think they should date. Team CVFY really shines in these books.
Unfortunately there are a lot of side/background characters that have like no personality and are boring. In the show it works because you see them have cool designs and participate in cool fight scenes, but in the book they are just a bore.
Also, Team SSSN was highlighted in Before the Dawn, but Sage had zero role in the story and he could have been gone entirely and nothing would have changed. RIP Sage.
Writing Style: 5/10
The writing style was bearable, but not particularly to my liking. Also I found several typos. But for just being a book to supplement an anime, I think it gets the job done. I mean, it basically reads like fanfiction. It might qualify as a YA novel but 4th and 5th graders could read it pretty easily. I think.
Re-readability: 4/10
Someday if I'm desperate for RWBY content or just nostalgic I can see myself potentially coming back to read these books.
But for now... I think I'll just rewatch the show.
