The air was crisp with a leaf-bare breeze, the cats quivering beneath their thin, delicate fur coats. Bright white snow crystals fell and sparkled, nestling themselves into white sheets on the Earth below. Featherkit's eyes were still closed, but she could feel the cold snow dissolving on her pelt. The only thing that warmed her was her mother's, Stormtail, breath as they nuzzled in close. She could hear cats moving around the camp, lapping up water from the stream that circled itself round IceClan's camp. Despite their Clan's name, they often had warmth and plants which had grown until they couldn't grow any longer.
"When will Featherkit open her eyes?" A familiar kit voice mewed, however it was muffled from their mother's fur.
"That is one thing we cannot decide for her. When she is ready, her eyes will open," Stormtail replied softly, her long tail brushing across Featherkit's closed eyes.
The kit began to feel the snowflakes slow down, less and less falling every heartbeat, and heaved a sigh of relief. Her eyes began to flicker open, seeing a light grey pelt and endless layers of white covering the Nursery. Then her view was blocked by her sister's and brother's faces. They had dark grey pelts, like their father Waterleaf, whereas Featherkit had light grey like Stormtail's.
"Her eyes are open!" Her brother leaped with joy, meowing and caterwauling which caused IceClan kits to look over at what was going on. "I'm Stonekit! This is our sister, Sillykit!"
"Hey!" Her sister objected angrily. "My name is not Sillykit! It's Snowkit!"
"You don't look very snow to me. More grey, and dark," Stonekit retorted.
"It's because I was born on the first day of leaf-bare, and everywhere was filled with snow!" As they argued, Featherkit tried to take in her mother's sweet smell, and nestled closer to her.
"Wow, she opened her eyes! They're ice blue, just like her mother's," a female cat with a dark grey stripy pelt approached them kindly.
"I know, isn't she beautiful, Crystalstripe?" Stormtail replied.
Featherkit was about to speak, until a male voice suddenly interrupted and gazed at them with love in his eyes. "You look just like your mother, Featherkit. I am your father, Rockclaw."
"Wow, there's a lot of cats around here!" Featherkit exclaimed.
"You couldn't be more right," Rockclaw sighed. "We need more warriors, to hunt during the harsh leaf-bare moons, and to fight against cats who break the warrior code."
Featherkit nodded slowly, heading over to join Stonekit and Snowkit, batting at them playfully with her paws. I'm going to be the best warrior the forest has ever known! I'll start practising now! I wanna become leader one day! She thought to herself, looking out through the exit to the snow-covered camp, filled with cats sharing fresh-kill and tongues amongst each other. Then, in the corner of her eye, Featherkit spotted the bright white leader Snowstar, organising patrols and looking around the camp with his ice blue gaze. Suddenly, the kit felt an urgent desire to become leader, but as her mother had always told her, do not try and get what you want, because in the end it will only destroy you.
"Hey Featherkit! Stop daydreaming and get over here!" Stonekit mewed, pinning Snowkit beneath his heavy body.
Featherkit laughed, looking at Snowkit's body wriggling under Stonekit's grasp.
