PROLOGUE
A silver queen rasped her tongue over her three sleeping kits, her multicolored eyes warm and a purr rumbling in her throat. She looked up as a white tom came into the nursery. His yellow eyes gleamed happily at the sight of his moon-old kits, and he purred as he set a mouse down at the queen's feet. "Thank you, Dart." The queen purred to her mate. Dart nodded, and turned when another cat called for him. "Dart, mind taking a border patrol?" Another tom called. "Sorry, Bearfoot' s calling. I love you, Pebble" He whispered to his mate, before turning back to Bearfoot. "Sure, another patrol can't hurt." He meowed, before dashing off and joining Bearfoot and a few fellow warriors. Pebble turned back to her kits, who were now awake. "Aww, did Daddy have to leave again?" One asked, a she kit with white fur, silver toes, and silver ear tips, and eyes just like her mother. "Yes, I' afraid so, Frost." Pebble replied. The two others, twin tom kits with dark grey-blue fur and yellow eyes, the only differing factor about them the white toes that one bore, started mewling complaints. "Minnow, Stone, calm down, please. He'll be back after this border patrol, and he can spend some time playing with you all." After this they settled, and asked to go play while they had energy, and Pebble complied, watching them carefully as she followed them out into the sun.
CHAPTER ONE
The half moon shone brightly overhead as Frost bounded over to the warriors guarding camp. "Hello, Frost, what brings you here tonight?" A tuxedo-pelted she cat with orange eyes purrs to the small kit. The other warrior looks over, another she cat, this one bearing a thick dull grey pelt and yellow eyes. She acknowledged Frost' s presence with a nod and a slight flick of her tail tip. "Hello, Nightflower, Pebblepelt. Can I help you guard the camp until Gorseleaf comes back?" Gorseleaf, a tortiseshell tom without a speck of white on him and blue eyes, was the medicine cat, and Frost was very fond of him, and her dreams were to follow in his pawsteps. "Sure, just try not to drift off to sleep." Nightflower meowed warmly. Frost brushed up against the young warrior before sitting beside her and watching the activity of the night. Birds danced among the canopy of trees above and in front of them, a squirrel shimmyed up a tree silently, appearing and disappearing as it climbed higher and higher until it reached its destination above the leaves. She watched flowers and blades of grass gently wrestle each other as a slight breeze ruffled them, then died down, and the foliage ceased its squabbling. As she watched, she began to feel tired, but she would keep herself up until Gorseleaf came back from his journey to the Moonstone. She flicked an ear as something suddenly interrupted the peace of the night and sent the grass squabbling madly at the other blades before dying down again as a form flew through the camp. It was Gorseleaf. He hadn't made a sound other than his pawsteps pounding the ground on his way back, but it had stirred the creatures of the night, and they were now back in hiding. He beckoned Frost with his tail, and she bounded over to him and into the medicine den.
CHAPTER TWO
When Frost looked at Gorseleaf, he looked worried. "What happened? Did you get a troubling prophecy?" She asked, her small voice full of concern. Gorseleaf nodded. "Yes, yes it did. Do you want to hear it?" He meowed. As another cat came in, Gorseleaf whipped his head around and glared. It was a blue tom with green eyes, a warrior she had yet to meet. "Go away, Bluestorm, Frost and I are having a serious discussion." His tone was aggressive as he held back a growl. "But my paw..." Bluestorm meowed, but was cut off. "I'll see to your paw in a minute, Bluestorm. But right now, I am talking about what I saw at the Moonstone with the future medicine cat apprentice. Do you understand?" He growled, and Bluestorm nodded before dashing away. Gorseleaf turned back to Frost after letting out a breath. "Okay. It went like this... 'Broken minds and broken hearts, a long war starts in the heart of one. As insanity claws it's way to dominance, the world will bleed, and the ice will break.'
CHAPTER THREE
The two cats sat in silence for a while, both shocked and confused. Frost's eyes were wide, while Gorseleaf's were turned up in concern for the young cat. Bluestorm poked his head back inside the den, and they both turned and glared as he gave a slight mrrow, but they let him in. He showed his paw to them, and they were a bit surprised. It was experience for Frost, though. He had a large splinter caught in his paw that he couldn't get out. Gorseleaf fetched a few herbs then started pulling it out gently, despite Bluestorm's protests because it hurt him more when it was being pulled on. "You'll get an infection if we don't get it out. If it gets too bad, you might lose your paw." Frost meowed. She had heard a story or two of a cat losing his paw due to infection, or some other part of their body, like their tail or an ear. It shut him up, which both Gorseleaf and Frost were glad about. Gorseleaf rubbed the herbs on the wound where the splinter had been pulled. "The horsetail should help." He meowed, and Bluestorm padded off to the Warrior's den. "I'll tell Pinestar tomorrow. You get to sleep, now, we all need our rest." Gorseleaf yawned, and the two parted ways.
