I don't remember Hollyleaf being superficial but she was definitely preachy, and perhaps even slightly arrogant. (I always thought that she acted like she was StarClan's gift to the world.)
Okay, I understand Ashfur was upset that Squirrelflight picked Brambleclaw over him, but sheesh, threatening to kill her kits? Good grief, that is just overboard. Plus, Squirrel didn't even know he liked her like that.
[If, should I accidentally irritate somebody in this post, sorry.]
I, to be completely honest, greatly dislike Ashfur. To say I hate him would be a bit too strong, so I'll go with the before words. What he did was pretty unjustified. I admit, I kinda dislike Squirrel for being all choosy and switching to Ashfur because Brambleclaw chose not to listen to her bad-mouth his brother and wouldn't tell her of his person affair. (Again, my personal opinion), but Ashfur nearly became a murderer. Just because he couldn't get over the fact Squirrelflight wasn't in love with him. Like most have already covered, I think Ashfur could of ended up an interesting character and easier to sympathize with if he had more justified reasons for doing what he did. But, he didn't. He chose to murder Squirrelflight's kits because she chose Brambleclaw. She tried to be nice and care for him, and he had numerous chances to try and get along and eventually move on over her, but he chose not to, and eventually, after several, sevaral moons later, decides to go and murder her children. Which, Spoiler alert here,
So, overall, I did dislike him. I don't think it was much over the Squirrelflight business that I disliked him. I mean, don't get me wrong, my dislike for him grew immensely after that (I'm on Brambleclaw's side, kinda), but before all of it, I never really cared or was interested in him. He just seemed like a random cat I didn't much care for, up until Squirrelflight started hanging with him, and then, since I favored Brambleclaw, and despite Squirrelflight's spoiled actions, I still shipped those two, I just disliked him more. In the end, I didn't care much that Hollyleaf killed him. I mean, he was trying to murder others, so I feel it was rather justified, or would of been. I think at least him being barely accepted into Starclan was a fitting response.
Ashfur also comes across as abusive but even from a writer's pov the stakes arent high enough for him to be much of a threatening villain, certainly not to the audience i mean yea hollyleaf killing him is extreme but thats probably less extreme than ashfur in the first place. hollyleaf just gets hate for it partly because she's so hard to find likeable to begin with and while her issues are sympathetic their execution is not verdict: ashfur = nice guys tm
