I'd say he's kinda similar to my baby, Hawkstar. Probably the only reason I actually like Ashfur is because my first warrior cat character ever created had a similar happening with love, but instead of trying to kill her kits, he actually killed her.

ashfur is unsympathetic from both a character pov and from an aspect of writing pov i dont like him, he's not terribly written but he's so unsympathetic that its not really any fun to see him imo after analyzing his character there's nothing sympathetic to be found in relation to other characters (though him getting offed by hollyleaf is equally bad but thats for another time)
HOWEVER the ashfur in shadowclan 10/10, perfect, i want ashfur and ashfur to fight in the pit

he's really just a poor cat that went through hard times, his sibling died, then his other sibling died, His mom died, he got hated on by the deputy, then he got rejected, then he was in pain when he saw his loves kits. Lastly he was killed by his loves 'kit' then he wasn't totally excepted in Starclan!

I think from a writer's point of view he could've been really interesting, though I feel like they could've done more with him. However, he was an awful character, in my opinion, and what he did wasn't justified at all. I used to hate him, but at this point most characters that have at least a bit more personality in the warriors series are at the very least interesting in a writing aspect. (I still don't like Ashfur as a character, but I admit that he was a different kind of villain)

Yeah i wont say his actions were totally justified but he had been Through so much i get what he was trying to do by "killing" squirrel flights "kits." he is a good character (villain) but Erin could have done so much more with him he is my favorite as you can see from my avatar Anyway thanks for your thoughts!

I don't remember much about warriors, but I think even though it was easy to feel bad for him because of his reasons, he's pretty awful and I don't feel bad for him at all. I really do not like Ashfur.

Well so you know Ashfur and squirrelflight "fell in love" but when squirrelflight choose brambleclaw over Ashfur he got really mad and trapped squirrelflights kits( they are actually leafpools kits but she raised them kits don't know) in a ring of fire and guarded the way out he told squirrel flight that he was killing her kits so she would feel the pain he felt when she left him but when she told him that they were not her kits and killing them wouldn't hurt her he and the kits were surprised anyway the kits had a hard time forgiving her any way later after this Hollyleaf killed him. Anyway thats the story in a nut shell

While I don't think Ashfur's actions (attempting to kill Squirrelflight's kits and also attempting to ruin their lives) could not be justified by claiming that he had a rough life, I also don't think Hollyleaf actually killing him can be justified either. It raises a lot of moral questions, that I feel isn't relevant to this series. I guess that is normal coming from someone who is very pacifistic, but I think that what Hollyleaf did to Ashfur was almost worse than what Ashfur did to her and her family.
I feel like Ashfur doing what he did to Squirrelflight and her family is not justifiable; along with the fact that he plotted with Hawkfrost to kill Firestar (it is said so in the book) makes him just a bad character. Firestar, along with Squirrelflight's kits, had nothing to do with the pain that he was feeling.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is that while Ashfur definitely had plenty of suffering in his life, it doesn't justify his actions, just as Scourge's backstory doesn't justify him killing so many cats.

Well Scourge's backstory wasnt the worst, except for being almost killed, and he kinda became like from being beaten down hit abused bullied. He kinda has a right to be mad and angry and cold like that.
As for Ashfur he only wanted to kill the kits to make her feel the pain he felt. It made him feel angry/sad he kinda has a right too.
I really love both of them.

I don't consider anger to be an excuse for attempted murder.

I really love both of them. Yes, of course they both have the right to be upset, but I don't think it justifies their actions. They're simply reasons. I don't like Hollyleaf much either, from what I remember of her. She kept preaching about the warrior code, and if I correctly she was a bit superficial. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.
