Chapter 1
A heavy weight landed on top of Ivypaw. The silver RiverClan cat looked over her shoulder to see Applepaw, her best friend, who had a red sleek fur. He pinned her down and lifted his head proudly. Ivypaw snorted and managed to look at the dim sunlight coming in through the apprentices' den entrance.
"Come on, Ivypaw!" Applepaw exclaimed, backing away for her to stand. "Today's our final assesment! Wake up a little, will you?"
Ivypaw leaped to her paws and shook scraps of moss from her pelt. She realized how leaner she had become, and how she had grown taller and thicker. Applepaw's body, on the other hand, was skinnier and lithe, while he looked a lot more muscled than how he had looked as a kit. Proud of herself, Ivypaw shot out of the den and halted in front of her mentor, Brackenstorm.
"Oh, good morning, Ivypaw." Brackenstorm meowed. Her golden tabby pelt shone in the sunlight. "Are you ready? Remember this will tell wether you become a warrior right away, or you should train more."
Ivypaw dipped her head, and excitement churned at her belly. I will do it in the best way I can! "Of course, Brackenstorm. I will show you I'm the best cat RiverClan has ever seen!"
"Beware of those words, Ivypaw," chuckled Brackenstorm, and after a moment's hesitation, she said, "Beware, because those words might just lead to ambition and worse. But I understand your excitement, and that's great." She shook her head, as if regretting what she had said.
Ivypaw cocked her head, but decided to ignore it. She saw Applepaw straining his ears as his mentor, Clearpatch, spoke to him, and her sisters, Brookpaw and Willowpaw getting ready to leave the camp. Brackenstorm flicked her tail toward the camp's entrance, and with a gasp, Ivypaw headed to the signaled spot.
"Hi, Ivypaw," Brookpaw mewed, her brown fur smooth and tidy. "Willowpaw was just explaining to me the possible activities for our assesments."
"Yes, and they are not that easy," growled Willowpaw, frowning. She had her pale gray fur ruffled and messy, like she always had since she was a kit.
Ivypaw thought about what they would have to do, but no ideas crossed her head. Battle? Swim? Fish? Track something? As her head spun with confusion, Applepaw appeared beside them.
"And not that hard." He meowed, then grinned. Ivypaw bumped him on the side with her head.
"Hey, smug, let's see what you have to say when you fail." She teased. Applepaw curled his lip playfully, but was interrupted as all the apprentices' mentors came over to them.
"The first thing you have to do is catch a big fish. By that, I mean a fish that would feed four cats at the same time." Clearpatch instructed, his voice low when two kits, Troutkit and Minnowkit, tried to hear the conversation.
"There are plenty of them by the deep part of the river, so you'll have to swim down," Brookpaw's mentor, Rainsong, added. "Each of you will be assigned a part of the river. As to any complaints, it doesn't matter which is easier to do the chore or which is harder to, you just have to do it."
"Then you must track a determined herb--coltsfoot--and find it. The first of you to find it, take one of the four there are, and leave. Try to mix your scent, or the others could identify it better and cheat on the assesment," Brackenstorm meowed. Snowfall, Willowpaw's mentor, nodded in agreement.
"We will be watching you." He warned. "Now, you can leave. Brookpaw will catch the fish closer to the waterfall, while Willowpaw will catch one at the middle of the river. Applepaw will fish closer to Sunningrocks, and Ivypaw will fish farther through the river."
Ivypaw shot away as fast as she could. She saw Applepaw jumping into the water, and Willowpaw and Brookpaw running to their assigned places. The silver tabby she-cat felt the wind on her ears as she plunged into the fast current of the river. She hold her breath as whirls and bubbles passed past her. A couple of average fishes crossed her path, but she forced herself to ignore them. Below, she could make out the shapes of the bigger fish Clearpatch spoke about. They were plump and looked fit enough to feed four cats. If a cat ate one itself, it would obviously have bellyache. Ivypaw dove deeper into the water and felt her lungs starting to ache for breath. She admired the fish that appeared right in front of her mouth, and instinctively, without thinking of using her claws, she opened her mouth and tried to bite it. Although she managed to clamp her jaws on its throat and kill it, Ivypaw almost lost her catch as she grabbed it. She had opened her mouth, and water filled her nose and throat as she desperately batter her paws to find a way to get out of the river.
I'm drowning! I'm drowning, right? This is such a stupid way to die!
