Prologue
Staring out into the distance. That was Petal'dreams favorite thing to do. She had died two days ago, in a battle between us and Wind'clan. They had just finished having the death ceremony. Everyone was asleep, except for White'blossom. I didn't mean to. I swear. If I had just had time to say sorry I- Her thoughts were cut off by a cat staring out into the woods at the fence. White'blossom was out of camp, near the kitty'pet place. She hated the smell back here, but it was the only place that didn't remind her of Petal'dream. She stared at the cat on the fence, before there was a two'leg yell. The cat on the fence jumped down, and walked into the two'leg nest. White'blossom walked to camp.
Who are you? Chapter one
Emmy just woke up to sunshine warming her sand colored golden dappled fur. Her pale green eyes glittered in the light. She jumped off of her bed and over to her food bowl which, was, again, not the food she liked. There had to be some other choice, right? She thought, pawing the food in the plastic, glittery pink bowl.
She thought about the cat she saw in the woods the other night. White with light gray swirls and bright blue eyes. Its paws were stained with blood that smelled of fish and it was licking its lips, while obviously in deep thought. Had it seen her? was it one of those... she paused. Forest cats? Her tail flicked with envy. She hated the small den she had to be confined in. She wanted to explore the woods and all the animals that lived in it. But, she knew she didn't have the guts to do that.
Taking only one bite of that retched kibble, she padded to the kitty-door and went into the fence to see her friend, Zoe. She would tell her about the cat she saw in the woods, and Zoe would know what to do. Zoe was all about cats in the wild and stuff, though she always said she never wanted to become one.
When she got outside, Zoe was already waiting for her. "What took you so long?" Zoe asked. "Sorry. Guess I slept in." Replied Emmy. "But anyway, I have the craziest story to tell you!" Emmy exclaimed, and quickly told Zoe about the cat in the woods.
"Fish smelling blood? I heard that there are cats out there who eat fish. I think they're called..." Zoe paused for a moment then continued. "River'tribe cats!" She finally meowed. "Well, anyway, have you ever thought about... going out of your den? I mean, past the fence?" Asked Emmy quietly. "Of course not! Thats like... suicide!" Exclaimed Zoe. "I know but...-" Her response was cut off by rustling in the bushes, bigger that just a bird or mouse.
Suddenly, a cat around the size of Zoe and Emmy popped out. It was gray, with one orange leg, a black splattered tail, and white dapples covered the other leg. It had orange eyes and a wide smile. Zoe tried shoving her back out of anxiousness, but, curiosity grappling her, Emmy leaped quietly under the fence into a shaded area behind a tree, and watched the strange cat. The cat was sniffing at the air and looking around.
Then, suddenly, a cat much larger than it appeared. It looked familiar. Then Emmy realized. It was the cat from the other night! Same fish stained paws, white fur with slightly darker swirls, and light blue eyes. It looked angry and sad. It looked like it was about to scold the first cat, but then sniffed the air and stared directly at the tree Emmy was behind. Then, suddenly, it went towards the tree and yelled angrily;
"Who are you? come out this very instant!"
By sundown. chapter two
She stepped from behind the tree to face the two cats, who bristled their fur whenever she was in sight. Her collar's bell jingled as she walked towards them. " Hello. " She began. " I'm Emmy, and I live on the other side of that fence.. " She said, holding her breath. " Why are you on this side of the fence, kitty-pet? " Spat the older cat. " Just... curiosity? " She squeaked. It wasn't an excuse, but if it was, it would have been a bad one.
" Well, stop being so curious and get the h- " The old cat started to say, before she was cut off by another cat entering the woods.
" What seems to be the trouble, petal'dreams? " It said. It looked very old, and wise as much. It was hairless, its light pink skin bright in the sun above. " N-nothing, N-no'star... just getting this k-kittypet to leave... " Replied Petal'dreams.
" Well, I think the kittypet is just fine where it is. Do you agree, painted'paw? " Replied No'Star. " Yes, ma'am! " Said painted'paw.
" Whats your name, kittypet? " Asked the old cat, No'star. " Oh, I-I'm Emmy... " Emmy replied, tail twitching in embarrassment. " Well, follow me, Emmy! If your so curious, why don't I show you around the woods? " No'star smiled. Emmy jumped in excitment. Finally, a chance to meet a forest cat, and see the woods! Goodbye, old housefolk nest! Emmy thought, following No'star around fallen logs and streams.
" Wowie! This water feels refreshing! " Said Emmy as she waded with No'star through some water. " You river'tribe cats sure have a bunch of fun, I bet! " Emmy exclaimed. Then, No'star paused in the middle of the stream. " No, no we don't. We have to fight every day to get food, and keep our lives. Its not all fun and games in the forest, Emmy. Its survival. " Said No'star in a shallow tone. " Oh, I-I-I'm so sorry, I- " Emmy begun. " -No, no dearie. its fine. As a matter a fact, why don't you come live with us, see what its like? " No'star said, cutting off Emmy. Emmy gasped. Should she? I mean, being in the woods was nice, but...
" I'll give you by sundown tomorrow to make your decision. Meet me back here, and give me your answer. And also, its not river'tribe, its river'clan. " Said No'star, before running off and leaving Emmy to walk back home.
I made my decision. Chapter three
It was the next day, Emmy had gone into her nest last night and fell asleep while pondering the choice No'Star gave her. She walked into the living room just in time to say bye to her housefolk before they left.
The food bowl was filled with that disgusting kibble, and Emmy knew she could wait to eat. Unless... She thought, as she hopped onto the kitchen counter and onto the cold box. At the top of it was a jar of catnip, which she pushed onto the floor and it broke on impact. She jumped down and started eating it.
" Psst, Emmy! " Said a voice from the cat door in the back of the housefolk nest. She stalked over there to see Zoe, quietly entering the house. " Are your housefolk gone? " Asked Zoe. " Yes, yes, come on in, I got the Catnip! " Exclaimed Emmy. They both trotted over to the catnip and started eating it.
" So... how was the expedition with that old cat? " Asked Zoe. " Oh, fine. She uhh... She asked me to join the clan. " Replied Emmy. Zoe gasped. " What?! Well, you aren't going to, right?! " Asked Zoe. " I don't know, Zoe. This has been my dream since I was a little kit, y'know. " Emmy responded with a stressed sigh. " I have until sundown today to make my decision, and it might be a yes... " Continued Emmy. " You can still visit me if you do though, right..? " Asked Zoe in an solemn tone. " Of course! I'll visit you everyday if I can! " Exclaimed Emmy, finishing the rest of the catnip, before hearing a housefolk yowl.
" Oop- that's my cue! See you soon, Emmy! " Exclaimed Zoe. " Bye... " Replied Emmy, as Zoe ran out the door. Emmy sat, nudging the broken glass from the catnip jar on the floor, feeling loopy from all the catnip, she probably got drunk off it.
As she went to get some water from her water bowl, she noticed it was almost sundown. She had talked to Zoe for longer than expected. After she got water, she ran outside, leaped over the fence, and ran towards the stream they agreed to meet at.
She got there at sundown, where No'Star was waiting. " Ah, hello, Emmy. I expect you made your decision? " Asked No'star. " I-I have... " Muttered Emmy. " Well, lets hear it. " Replied No'Star. Emmy thought about Zoe, her housefolk, and what was best for everyone.
" I made my decision. I'm joining River'clan. " Said Zoe.
I think so. Chapter four
Suddenly, a large rustling in the bushes were heard. " Whose there? " Asked No'star in a loud voice, heard a mile a way, probably. Then suddenly, a young cat rolled out of the bush. Wait, I know that cat... Zoe! Zoe had rolled out of the bush and landed on her back, staring at No'star.
" S-Sorry, No'star, I just... I'm going to miss Emmy when she goes off to river...clan. But just wondering, Is she going to be a medicine cat? Or a deputy? How many... bor-der patrols will she do? " Asked Zoe. No'star chuckled. She chuckled. No, she didn't rip off Zoe's face for trespassing, she chuckled.
" You take in information quick! " Exclaimed No'star. " Y'know, speaking of medicine cats... Hey, zoe, you don't have to miss Emmy. We're in need of a medicine cat apprentice. Since you take information so quick, you'd be great at it! You don't have to, but, my clan could learn to deal with more than one kittypet. "
Zoe paused. She was in deep thought, definitely. Emmy kind of wished she could enter Zoe's mind to see what she was thinking.
After a few moments of thought, Zoe took a deep breath and responded.
" Y'know... I think so. " Zoe smiled, and we ran towards our new home. Wading rivers, jumping logs, even learning to catch food on the way.
Surprise, surprise! Chapter five
When they had finally entered the camp, Emmy was counting the cats. Zoe had told her a healthy clan had around 30, but this only had about 15. Most of the cats looked sad, while others looked sick. No'star lead them both to her den.
" As you could see, the clan isn't doing well. " Begun No'star. " Which is why when you all join the clan, they will be happy to see you. " She continued. " Follow me, we can make the announcement. " Finished No'star. They padded towards a big rock and climbed on top of it.
" Let all cats old enough to swim the rapids come to wet rock for a clan meeting! " No'star yowled. As she said that, all the cats came towards the rock and sat, to listen to what their leader has to say. " Today, we are lucky. Starclan has brought us two kittypets to join our clan today. Meet Zoe and Emmy. We will be changing their names and giving them mentors. Surprise, surprise everyone, treat them kindly. "
Some of the cats grunted, others smiled and whispered things like " Finally, new cats " Or " Maybe this clan is getting back together. " But none protested. Except one cat. She was long and lengthy, didn't look like the rest of the cats, and looked strong. She had gray fur and hazel eyes, with black stripes all around her fur. She was standing on the smaller rock, which Emmy guessed showed she was deputy.
" No'star, are you sure we can... trust them? They are kitty pets, after all. " Asked the deputy. " Don't worry, long'stripe. They simply need their collars off. " Responded No'star. " Yes, ma'am. " sighed Long'stripe. No star used a strange object to slice our collars off, and proceeded to give us mentors and names.
Naming ceremony Chapter six
" Emmy. You have reached the age of six moons, and it is now time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as dipped'paw. Your mentor will be Petal'dream. I hope Petal'dream will pass down all she knows to you. "
" Petal'dream, step up. "
" Petal'dream, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You have received excellent training from Broad'eye, and have shown yourself to be brave and cunning. You will be the mentor of dipped'paw, and I hope you pass on all the information you know to her. " No'star said as Petal'dream and Dipped'paw touched noses.
" Zoe. You have reached the age of six moons, and it is now time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you recieve your warrior name, you will be known as silver'paw. Your mentor will be groomed'pelt, our medicine cat. I hope groomed'pelt will pass on all he knows to you. "
" Groomed'pelt, step up. "
" Groomed'pelt, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You have received excellent training from Sly'snake, and have shown yourself to be smart and relaxed. You will be the mentor of silver'paw, and I hope you pass on all the information you know to her. " No'star said as Groomed'pelt and Silver'paw touched noses.
" Clan dismissed. "
New life Chapter seven
After the ceremony, Zoe- no, Silver'paw, had walked to her new den with the medicine cat, Groomed'pelt. They talked and laughed and exchanged knowledge, but, Emmy, now Dipped'paw, wasn't so lucky. She tried to talk to her mentor the way silver'paw and Groomed'fur did, but Petal'dream simply said; " Whatever, I don't care. " And walked away.
Fine, then! If Petal'dream didn't like dipped'paw, then dipped'paw didn't like her. As dipped'paw stalked off to the apprentice den, she heard someone shout her name. " Dipped'paw! Over here! " Shouted a voice. She turned to see three cats, her age, beckoning her to come over. " Hello! I'm Squeal'paw! And this is Bloom'paw, Grave'paw, and Otter'paw. We're your apprentice room mates! " Giggled Squeal'paw. " We already know your name, so you don't have to tell us it. " Bloom'paw added.
Dipped'paw smiled. new friends! Room mates! Wowie, this'll be fun! She was excited to tell silver'paw all about it, well, until... " So, you wanna be cool? I mean, have friends, like us? " Squeal'paw smiled. " Ditch her. " Said Grave'paw. " Who? " Asked Dipped'paw. "Ditch the friend. Silver'paw." He repeated. "Guys, this isn't a go-" Otter'paw begun. "Shut up, Otter. Your lucky your even alive right now." Bloom'paw snapped.
It was her first day at riverclan, and she already was making tough choices. She looked at squeal'paw, grave'paw, and bloom'paw, who looked kind, but mean at the same time. Then she looked at otter'paw. He was better than them. He had the same look in his eyes as Silver'paw. He didn't care about popularity. And that gave Dipped'paw her choice.
" No. You might be 'cool' and all, but at least the friends I have are true." Spat dipped'paw. "And Otter'paw, don't listen to them, just be friends with me, and Silver'paw, and you'll stay alive." Dipped'paw smiled. Otter'paw nodded, and walked to sit next to Dipped'paw.
"Fine!" Squeal'paw spat. "Just enjoy your new life, because its going to be a living hell. " Hissed Grave'paw. But Otter and dipped'paw were already walking to the medicine den to see her greatest friend, Sliver'paw.
Chapter eight oooooo-!
"Silver'paw!" Dipped'paw smiled as they entered the medicine den. "Dipped! Just in time, guess What? I already learned two herbs!" Exclaimed Silver. "Really? What are they?" Asked Dipped. "This is Poppy. It helps soothe stress and pain, and makes a sick cat rest." Silver explained as she held out four little seeds. "And cobweb helps patch wounds!" Silver continued, pointing at webs on a shelf.
"Uhm, hate to ruin the moment, but lets not forget I'm here." Stuttered Otter'paw. "Oh, yeah, sorry! Silver, meet Otter'paw. You can call him Otter." Meowed Dipped'paw. "Oh, hello! I'm Silver'paw, the new medicine apprentice!" Exclaimed Silver'paw. Otter looked at dipped and smiled softly, looking into eachothers eyes, Dipped got lost a moment. Just staring, into those lovely green eyes...
"Hey! Guysss, focus!" Silver yelled, taking Dipped out of the trance. Then Silver looked. from Otter, to Dipped, then Otter, back to Dipped again. Until she gasped and started squealing. "Whats wrong?!" Asked Otter. "Does she usually do this?!" He asked again. "No, she hasn't done this since... Oh no. Silver, NOO.. ITS NOT WHAT YOU THINK IT IS!" Dipped gasped. "Not what what is? Did I do something?" Shrieked Otter. And then she said it. She really ruined Dipped's whole career.
" YOU HAVE SUCH A CRUSH ON HIMMM~~!" Yelled Silver, making Otter flinch and Dipped curl into a ball of despair. "Silver no, I don't!" Cried Dipped. It was her first day, and she already lost her one new friend. "Its fine, Dipped, I believe you, not her." Otter smiled. "Oooooo-!" Silver sung. "Thank you, Otter. And SILVER IF YOU DON'T SHUT YOUR BIG MEDICINE CAT MOUTH!" Dipped smiled, chasing Silver around in the medicine den.
Out of the corner of Dipped's eye, she happened to notice No'star staring at them with a gloomy expression. Is something going to happen?
Chapter nine. First lesson:
After she finished chasing Silver around, she decided to go to bed. When she got to the apprentice den with Otter, she noticed that the only two beds left were in a dimly lit corner, which, also happened to be a lot more cold than the rest of the den. She caught Grave'paw looking at Dipped and Otter shivering, and he snickered slightly.
I swear, if it's a fight they want, it's a fight they can get! Thought Dipped, as she fell asleep for the first time in her new home.
When Dipped woke up the next morning, she was the only one left in the den. As she walked out, she say Petal'dream waiting outside the den for her. "You were asleep. Till sunhigh. Do you even know when you're supposed to wake up?" Spat Petal'dream. "Hey, I have to say, I thought you mentored Painted'paw. Where is he anyway?" Asked Dipped. "Oh, no, I don't mentor hi- HEY, YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW THAT! STOP TRYING TO CHANGE THE SUBJECT!" Petal'dream screeched.
After that was over, they exited the clan to learn about the territory. First the went to the gorge. Although, they didn't go near it, since apprentices aren't aloud to. This bordered Windclan and Riverclan. Then they went towards the river, which Dipped didn't go in, since she hadn't been taught to swim yet. Then they went to the twoleg bridge, which they also didn't go to close to, since it is usually only used to get to fourtrees, the gathering place for every full moon. Lastly, they went to Beech copse, which is where the apprentices train.
"Alright, this was our last landmark." Begun Petal'dream. "Now your going to get a quiz. Are you ready?" Asked Petal'dream. "Yes, ma'am." Responded Dipped.
"Alrighty then. What other clan does the gorge border?" Asked Petal'dream. Dipped almost said airclan, when she realized it wasn't. "Oh, windclan." Dipped answered. "Good job, kittypet." Petal'dream exclaimed.
"Now, where do all the clans meet up on full moon, and how do we get there?" Continued Petal'dream. It took Dipped a moment to think about this one, before she once again responded correctly. "All the clans meet at FourTrees during the full moon, and usually get there from the twoleg bridge." Dipped finally responded after a moment.
"Okay, you did pretty good. So why don't we go back and stay at the camp for the rest of the day. Hope you liked your first lesson!" Petal smiled as they both bounded away to camp.
This is sadly the quick end of this project of mine. I lost interest and now think this isn't something I want to continue. Don't excpect a sequal, but I may use these characters again someday. (I know my spelling sucks dont remind me )
Staring out into the distance. That was Petal'dreams favorite thing to do. She had died two days ago, in a battle between us and Wind'clan. They had just finished having the death ceremony.
