Prologue
It was dark that night, very very dark. A small kit dashed across the thunderpath. Two other kits creeped up to the road, the first one, a tabby, backed up, the second, a white kit, wrinkled his nose and went back to where the first kit went. "Oh come on! Are you guys scared?" This was the kit who had crossed. The tabby bulked up and ran across the road. Laughing, she tackled the other kit. "See isn't it fun Leafkit!" The tackled kit exclaimed. "Okay, okay! I admit it is fun!" said the tabby- Leafkit. "Come on Whitekit!" Leafkit said. The white kit shrank back, then dashed across the thunderpath. HONK! A monster ran across the road and drove on top of Whitekit. He let out a wail, and then collapsed on the ground. A twoleg jumped out of the monster and picked up Whitekit. "Oh no Leopordkit... What have you done?" Leafkit said. She sank to the ground and cried, Leopardkit in shock. The twoleg pulled out a flashlight and shined it on the two kits. He murmured something then picked them up and drove off, with all three kits in the car. Leopardkit padded Whitekit. "Are you ok?" She said. He didn't move.
Chapter 1
Roxie pounced on Cloud, "got ya!" She exclaimed, her collar jingling. Cloud looked at her in disbelief "You are way to fast, even for Pepper!" Roxie laughed when their owner came outside into the yard. He clapped his mighty hands and went back inside. Pepper looked up from where she was napping. "Lunch!" She yelled and dashed across the yard into the house. Cloud followed her and soon did Roxie. As she crawled inside, she saw Cloud and Pepper already eating from the food dish, crunching on the pellets. She looked up at them "I have a great idea!" She exclaimed as she started eating, her mouth full of food. Pepper looked at her. "What?" She asked. "Tonight, lets climb the fence and explore!" Cloud and Pepper looked at her wide-eyed. "You're not serious-" Cloud started then lowered his voice "Are you?" Pepper looked at her "If you go I go... Sisters stick together." Roxie nodded "I am serious! So Cloud? Are you in? Or are you scared?" Cloud looked at her "Fine I'm in... When do we leave?" "Tonight? After our owners go to sleep?" Pepper asked. "Yes... Tonight!" Roxie exclaimed and jumped. Their owners finished eating and went up to them to pat them and say goodnight, and take of their collars. Roxie mewed when her female owner pat her. She was going to miss them, but not as much as she was going to miss this opportunity if she didn't go. As their owners went upstairs to bed, and Roxie, Cloud and Pepper had finished eating and drinking and using the sandy box, they crawled out into the backyard. Cloud approached the fence first. He jumped up to it and stood at the top for a few moments before he jumped to the other side. Pepper went next and then Roxie. She jumped up, sat there for a few agonizing moments and then jumped down. She turned to her old home I'll be back one day... She thought and then lead the party away, never looking back.
Chapter 2
Roxie walked with Pepper and Cloud through the odd mix between a swamp and a pine forest, it was really late, and she was getting tired. "Can we rest for the night?" Cloud whined. "Wait, I smell something!" Pepper exclaimed her tail flicking in the direction left of the three kits. "I smell it too, now that you've said it. It smells like cat." Roxie said as she heard the voices of four different cats. "Hide!" Pepper said, scared out of her skin. "Where?" Cloud murmured. "Climb! Up a tree!" Roxie exclaimed and climbed up the nearest tree and watched from a high branch with Cloud and Pepper, luckily they were light enough for the three different branches to support them. One of them was a tom that had jet black fur, another one was a small tortoiseshell she-cat. Beside her was a broad muscular tom with gray fur and one brown stripe down his back. The last cat was a gray-and-brown tabby she-cat. The tom with the black fur looked at the other cats "Grasspaw, were now near the thunderpath border." The tortoiseshell- Grasspaw- nodded. "Jetstar, where now?" She asked. Jetstar pointed with his tail toward the way the three kits came. "The twolegplace." He said, and the four cats continued that way. "Wait!" said the other tom "I smell something, that's not NightClan." "Oh please, Brownstripe, its just the Thunderpath nearby playing with your nose!" Grasspaw said. Cloud looked at Roxie, a worried expression on his face. The tabby she-cat shook her head "No Grasspaw, I do smell cat." Jetstar looked at her "Well do you think they are hiding in the trees? The trees are to weak to support a full-grown cat! Grasspaw is right, now lets move on." Roxie let out a sigh of relief as Jetstar said this. Pepper look at Cloud, then back at Roxie a sense of relief painted her face. As the four cats grew out of sight, Roxie, Cloud and Pepper decided they would stay up in the trees and rest, until sunrise that is.
******
Roxie woke up first, and almost forgot she was in the tree. She let out a tiny call to Pepper and Cloud, to wake the up. Cloud yawned and stretched as he jumped from branch to branch, out of the tree. Roxie followed, and then Pepper came last. "Come on, lets continue." Roxie said. "I'm hungry..." Pepper started "Wait! I smell mouse!" She said and tried to find the mouse, which she did. She pounced on the mouse but missed, and the mouse, frightened went right into Roxie's claws. With one swift nip, the mouse was dead. "Were eating that?" Cloud said in disbelief. "Well what else?" Pepper said and took a bite into the mouse. "Wow, this is amazing. Way better than the food from..." She started and then very quietly mewed "Home." Roxie, Cloud and Pepper ate the mouse in silence, but the look on their faces proved they loved it. Roxie continued leading the way north for a long time. Eventually she came across a ton of scents, all in one weird line. "Should we cross?" Cloud asked. "Yes" Roxie and Pepper meowed cheerfully. It was at that moment, that Roxie realized, she would never return to her owners again.
Chapter 3
Roxie crossed first. Stepping over it like there was a sort wall there, arching her back to not touch it. Pepper crossed next, the slowly and reluctantly, Cloud crossed. The scents were different now, the forest was different now. This forest had mixes of thin white trees, thick brown trees, tall trees and short trees. The leaf-fall leaves were covering the ground and Roxie found it nice to walk on them and crunch them in her paws. "Where are we, this place is amazing!" Cloud meowed in amazement.
"You're in ForestClan." Roxie hadn't even noticed the three cats appear. The one that spoke was a white and gray tabby. "Whats ForestClan?" Cloud asked. One of the smaller cats hissed "They smell like NightClan, they must be spies!" The third cat- a silvery-blue cat looked at him "Yes, spies at 5 moons old! Be realistic Rockpaw." Rockpaw continued to eye the three kits suspiciously. "I'm Mistfur, thats Rockpaw, and thats Bluepelt. Now what are your names?" Pepper looked at them "I'm Pepper, thats Cloud, and thats Roxie." Rock paw walked up to them, and sniffed them. His eyes went wide. "You three are kitty pets!" Mistfur looked at them "Why did you leave your home?" Roxie started clawing the leaves on the ground. "We wanted an adventure, but now, we don't wanna go back." Bluepelt looked down. She's so familiar... But how? Roxie thought. "We're going to have to take you back to the camp to speak with Ruststar. Follow us." Rockpaw meowed reluctantly, and started walking north-west. "you're lucky you turned on your way here from the twolegplace. Otherwise you would have been at slither rock." Roxie was confused by what Mistfur said, but didn't say anything. So she, Cloud and Pepper followed Mistfur, Rockpaw and Bluepelt all the way to the camp.
******
"Whats a camp?" Pepper asked, as they got closer. "You'll see." Mistfur replied. All of a sudden tons of cat smells hit Roxie's nose and lots of them were familiar. Mister ducked inside a humungous bramble bush, then Bluepelt and then Rockpaw. Roxie followed, afraid of being cut, but it was hollow, the scents in this entrance was the strongest, and it sloped downward into a ditch. The light peering in from the small holes in the bramble, and the entrance. There were a few other exits, but this one was clearly used most. The slope jutted forward, ahead of the rest of the walls, about 1/3 of the way in. In the centre of the camp was a huge rock, with a small cave carved out at the bottom. Next to this entrance-way was two caves, each much bigger. There was pile next to the huge rock full of fresh-kill. All the cats in the camp stopped what they were doing, and looked up at Roxie, Pepper and Cloud. One of them, a rusty-coloured cat stepped forward. "Mistfur, who are they?" He asked. "They smell like kitty pets!" A cat called out. Mistfur said something to this cat, who definitely had high authority, and then looked back at them. They rusty cat looked at Roxie, Pepper and Cloud and said "I am Ruststar, leader of ForestClan. You obviously don't want to go back to your old home. I will give you two options. You can stay, and be trained with the ways as a clan-born cat would be and never return home, or you can leave, get off our territory and never come back." There were howls of protest after he said this, but Ruststar ignored them. Cloud turned to Pepper and Roxie. "Should we?" He mewed. "We can't go back... it's too late." Pepper said. "I vote we stay." Roxie meowed, and Pepper did too, Roxie looked at Cloud "You don't have to stay if you don't want, but I want to live here, where the food tastes really good." Cloud looked at her "I can't leave both of my sisters behind, I'll stay." Roxie nodded in excitement, then turned to Ruststar. "We've made our decision. We'll stay and train like clan-born cats!"
Chapter 4
Ruststar looked at the three kits, then jumped up onto Highrock. "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath Highrock for a clan meeting!" he called. All the cats in the clearing started sitting down around the front of the rock, their tails flicking. "As you may know, we have three new cats joining the Clan. Roxie, Cloud and Pepper, please come here." The three kits jumped up to the Highrock, trying to hide their excitement. "From this day forward, you will no longer be kittypets, you will be fully ForestClan. Roxie, Pepper and Cloud, your dedication to your adventure has proved your worthiness. Roxie, from now on, until you reach six moons old, you will be known as Leopardkit, for your leopard-like pelt. Pepper, from now on, until you reach six moons old, you will be known as Leafkit, for your grace like leaves in the wind. Cloud, from now on, until you reach six moons old, you will be known as Whitekit, for your white pelt." There were yowls of protest, but Ruststar had already ended the clan meeting with a flick of his fiery tail. "Thats the nursery over there." Ruststar meowed. "Iceclaw!" As the she-cat padded toward him he said "Can you nurse these kits?" Iceclaw looked at them, a mixed emotion on her face, something like fear, sadness, pity and anger. "Yes, Ruststar." She said and hurried the kits away. He turned to look at the sun, now setting, then went into his den where he found sleep quicker than usual.
******
He woke with a start. He had the same dream as he always had since the prophecy, but now he understood. He hurried out of his den to the warriors' den, then padded Bluepelt. She woke with a start and he nudged for her to follow into his den. "What is it, Ruststar?" She asked. "There was a prophecy: There will be flames, but blood will burn harder." Bluepelt looked a him, in shock. "Why tell me?" "I think you have something to do with this, I saw something... But I don't know what yet."
Chapter 5
Leopardkit lay down around in the nursery, excited, but sad. She looked in what she thought was the direction of her old home, then at the sunset.. Iceclaw was sweet, and so was Dovekit and Firekit, but Ashkit was still weary around her. Applefur, on the other hand, did not even look at her, or her littermates. Leafkit, Whitekit and her decided it would be best not to sleep next to Ashkit and Iceclaw.. The three kits huddled next to each other in the corner of the nursery. Iceclaw came over to them. "You can sleep with me if you want, don't mind Ashkit. Also, Rockpaw was assigned to get you moss for your nest in the morning, so you three can go tell him if you want separate nests, or one big nest. Or even a bigger one with mine."
Leafpaw nodded. "Can we sleep together for the first few nights, then sleep with you?"
"Of course!" Iceclaw meowed, then lowered her voice so she didnt wake Birchkit, one of Applefur's kits. "You should really get to bed, its late for you kits." Then she hurried them over to her big nest and quieted her kits. Leopardkit huddled next to Leafkit who also huddled in a little closer. The nursery was warm, and had vines covering the entrance way, making it slightly darker inside. Leopardkit could not sleep, nor could Leafkit or Whitekit. It seemed like moons until she finally fell into the dark hold of sleep.
******
"Come on! WAKE UP Leopardkit!" Whitekit meowed, prodding Leopardkit's side. "What?" She said, still drowsy with sleep. She got up when she realized everyone else was up and about. Leafkit had already been bugging Mistfur on what it was like to be a warrior. Whitekit left the nursery to talk to Mistfur too. Leopardkit was about to join them when Firekit padded up to her. Leopradkit like Firekit, he taught her how to play moss-ball the day before. "Want me to give you a tour of the camp?!" He asked jumping up and down. He was half a moon older than her, and almost ready to leave the nursery. Or at least thats what he told her. Firekit padded up the to the entrance ramp and showed her the big rock- Highrock, as Ruststar called it. "This is Highrock, where the clan leader announces things and so and so. That cave at the bottom is the Leader's Den. Since Ruststar is the leader he sleeps there." He led her toward one of the two caves near the entrance ramp. "This is the Warriors' Den. When you become a warrior like Bramblepelt, you sleep here. The cave on the other side is the Apprentices' Den. Thats where I'm going to sleep when I become an apprentice! You too." He led them to the nursery, which was on the left of Highrock. "This, you already know, so we can skip it. On the other side of Highrock is the Medicine Cat's Den in that bush, which is the biggest den surprisingly, since it is in a bush. At the very back is the Elders' Den in the old tree log." He paused, noticing that its been a while since they started the tour. "The dawn patrol is back. I can smell them. Mistfur, Bramblepelt, Spottedheart and Rowanpaw." Leopardkit didn't smell anything at first, but then she saw them, and smelled them. "Here, follow me to the fresh-kill pile, we can share a vole." Firekit meowed. As they were eating Firekit looked up. "So you become an apprentice at six moons, then at around twelve moons or whenever you finish your training you become a warrior. Once you get old, you become an elder. If you become deputy, and the leader dies, you become leader. If you have kits then you are a queen and go to the nursery. Kits also sleep in the nursery. If lets say you don't want to be a warrior, you can train as the medicine cat apprentice and live in the Medicine Cat's Den. You can't have a mate, and you can't have kits. Your close to StarClan and everyone listens to you. You don't become an elder- you stay as a medicine cat until you die, you also don't become an official medicine cat until your mentor dies, even if you have your full name." Firekit took a bite out of the vole. By now Leopardkit had gotten used to the taste of prey, and she loved it. Leafkit and Whitekit came back and Firekit started the tour and explanation from the beginning. Then they played moss ball until sunset. Whitekit had talked to Rockpaw, and they slept with Iceclaw. Leopardkit slept next to Firekit and Leafkit, with Whitekit on the other side of Leafkit. Finally Leopardkit closed her eyes finally after another long day.
Chapter 6
Leopardkit opened her eyes. It was still dark outside the nursery, and everyone was asleep. Quietly, she padded outside the nursery and jumped up onto Highrock. She stared up at Silverpelt. Firekit had mentioned a StarClan, and she believed him. She stared, awestruck by its beauty. Then she was about to head back inside when an idea struck her mind. What if I did some exploring? She thought and headed up the stone ramp and out of the camp. She walked and walked until she heard a rustling in the bushes. She smelled cat. Almost immediately a tortoiseshell jumped out at her, with claws unsheathed. Leopardkit ducked away just in time, but was nicked in the ear. The attacker stopped. "Who are you?" Leopardkit asked. The she-cat didn't reply, but pounced on the kit. Leopardkit tried to escape, but the older cat was to strong. "Go home... You don't belong here." The she-cat said and released her. Leopardkit scampered back to the camp, trying to make it there before the sun rised, and someone noticed her absence. She travelled through the forest, panting. When she got there, only Applefur began to stir. She saw Leopardkit walking into the camp, and walked up to her. She nicked her in the ear. "You were with a cat!" She meowed. Her eyes widened. "You must leave and never return. You hear me? Go kittypet. Run, leave us and spare us. You don't belong here." Leopardkit shrank back. "Who was she?" She asked. Applefur looked away, in the direction of the sunset, a look of regret painted her face. "I guess you have the right to know, but you must leave. It might already be too late." She faced her again. "Her name is Briarclaw. She is a ForestClan outcast." She lowered her voice. "She was also my sister. I'm not being nice, I still hate you. But if you ever go near my four kits, I swear on StarCla-" She was cut off by Iceclaw coming towards them. "Applefur, she is just a kit, stop being such a fox-heart. Now, whats the matter?" Applefur turned to look at Iceclaw and whispered something Leopardkit could not hear. Iceclaw's eyes widened and she and Applefur went into the Leader's Den. By now the clan was almost fully awake, and Bramblepelt was organizing patrols. Ruststar poked his head out of his den and motioned for Leopardkit to come. When she sat down inside Ruststar spoke. "We can't abandon you, your still a kit. But we can't ignore this. If Briarclaw is still alive, and that scent is truly her's, then StarClan knows what might happen." Applefur shook her head. "She's a kittypet! Plus she might have run into Briarclaw, we have to leave her!" Ruststar put his paw down. "You will listen to me. I will send more patrols to the area she was in, and have more warriors guard the camp, we shall not raise panic. Don't give anyone the information you know." He flicked his tail to dismiss the three cats then went to talk to Bramblepelt.
******
By the time it was evening, she, Firekit, Whitekit, Leafkit and Dovekit had played a different game called chase. They had lots of fun and soon it was time for the kits to go to bed. Leopardkit closed her eyes, and dreamed she was in a field. A silvery she-cat walked up to her and dipped her head. "Greetings, I am Silverstar. You must be Leopardkit." She was about to say something else but Leopardkit had been woken up to the sound of wails coming from Birchkit. Applefur was taking care of the problem so Leopardkit went back to sleep. She had no dreams.
Chapter 7
Leopardkit woke up to Ruststar nudging her. "You and your littermates need to come with me." Then he walked and waited at the entrance. Leopardkit then woke up Whitekit and Leafkit, and the three of them met Ruststar at the camp entrance. It was still dark outside, and no one else was awake. Ruststar turned to them, his face stern. "Whitekit, how did you get that scar on your side." Whitekit looked down at his paws and mewed so softly Leopardkit had to strain to hear. "I got hit by a monster on the thunderpath." Ruststar nodded.
"Were you two near him at the time." He faced Leopardkit and Leafkit. "Yes, we were." Leafkit replied. Ruststar nodded again. "Were your names still Roxie, Cloud and Pepper? Or were they something else?" The three kits thought for a while, then, Whitekit flicked his tail. "No! Come to think of it... Wow it was so long ago... I think my name was Whitekit."
Chapter 8
Leopardkit stared in astonishment. "Wait... That means you are clan-born!" Ruststar nodded at Leopardkit, who was staring in shock. "All three of you were clan-born, and your mother still lives. She, in fact, is sleeping in that den." He pointed with his tail at the Warriors' Den. Leafkit shuffled her paws. "I think I remember that night. Leopardkit wanted to explore... Then Whitekit was hit by a monster! But Ruststar, who is our mother, and who is our father?" Leafkit looked like she was going to run into the den, where her mother might be and wake everyone up. "You shall know in time, now I have an announcement to make." Ruststar meowed and jumped onto Highrock. By now most of the Clan had been stirring. "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath Highrock for a clan meeting!" As the cats sat down, Whitekit looked at his littermates. "Who do you think or mother and father might be?" Leopardkit looked at Leafkit, then back at the Warriors' Den. "I don't know." After she said that, the three kits went into the clearing and sat down, wrapping their tails around their paws. Ruststar looked at Firekit, Dovekit and Ashkit. "Firekit, from this moment on, until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Firepaw. Backclaw, you shall be mentor to Firepaw." Blackclaw touched noses with Firepaw, pride gleaming in her blue eyes. They took their seats at the base of Highrock. "Dovekit, from this moment on, until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Dovepaw. Ivysong, you shall be mentor to Dovepaw." The two touched noses then sat at the base of the huge rock. "Ashkit, from this moment on, until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Ashpaw. Brackenfur, you shall be mentor to Ashpaw." The two touched noses and sat down at the base of Highrock. "I trust you three new mentors to pass down your knowledge onto these young cats, who will one day make fine warriors." Ruststar watched the clan cheer in excitement. "Firepaw, Dovepaw, Ashpaw!" With a flick of Ruststar's tail, they stopped. "That is not all. Rockpaw, please sand forward." Rockpaw did as he was told. "I, Ruststar, leader of ForestClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down upon this apprentice. He has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn. Rockpaw, do you promise to protect and defend this clan, even at the cost of your life?" Rockpaw was beaming. "I do." Ruststar then went on. "Then by the power of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Rockpaw, from this moment you will be known as Rockfur. I give you this name for your rock-like fur. ForestClan honours your bravery and dedication, and we welcome you as a full member of ForestClan." He rested his muzzle on his head, and Rockfur licked his shoulder in response. "Rockfur, Rockfur, Rockfur!" The clan cheered.
******
That night, Leopardkit had felt lonely. Without Firepaw, Dovepaw and Ashpaw, the nursery had seemed empty. Iceclaw was supposed to leave too, but had stayed to take care of Leopardkit, Whitekit and Leafkit. The three kits slept next to Iceclaw that night, and once again, Leopardkit had no dreams.
Chapter 9
It had been half a moon since the ceremony for Rockfur, Firepaw, Ashpaw and Dovepaw. In two days, Leopardkit, Leafkit and Whitekit would also have their ceremony, and Ruststar would tell the clan about them being clan-born. The days went by as usual, and the harsh cold season was almost upon them. That night, when Leopardkit had gone to sleep, she felt dizzy, and almost threw up. Iceclaw rushed over to her "Let's take you to Snowleaf." As they walked to Snowleaf's den, there was a rustling in the bushes. Iceclaw had not seemed to notice, but Leopardkit had. Everyone else was asleep, and Iceclaw had only woken up to Leopardkit's wailing and twitching. Iceclaw woke up Snowleaf from her light sleep. "What is it?" She asked groggily. At that moment, Leopardkit gave way to all the food that she ate, and it spilled over the floor of the den. The three cats wrinkled their noses. "From what I can see here, it seems as though you had just eaten something that upset your tummy. Eat this, it'll ease the pain, though it should go away on its own now." Snowleaf handed her two poppy seeds, and Leopardkit happily ate them. Tired, she and Iceclaw thanked Snowleaf, and headed back to he nursery. The young kit closed her eyes only to seemingly open them up somewhere else.
Chapter 10
"Hello, little one." It was a starry leopard-like tom. He stood tall, and was strikingly similar to Leopardkit.
"Who are you?" She asked, inspecting the strange tom. "I am Swiftclaw, but who I am means nothing know. Leopardkit, you and your littermates are truly destined for greatness. Use your gifts well, for they might lead you through the dark. They might save you from the storms. They might save you from fire. I must go now, but carry on... Even in your darkest times..." Swift claw slowly faded away, and Leopardkit was plunged into darkness, then, there was fire everywhere. The camp was on fire! She ran to tell someone but no one was there. There was a heavy rainfall, and lightning struck, hitting somewhere near ShadowClan. "Help! Leafkit! Cloudkit! Swiftclaw! I need you!" WIP
